UM-Bot Posted April 11, 2003 #1 Share Posted April 11, 2003 Earth may once have been surrounded by temporary rings of debris, much like Saturn, according to a new computer model that finds the rings might have cast parts of the planet into a twilight glow all day long. The idea is not new, but the fresh modeling adds weight to the plausibility of an asteroid impact kicking up a sea of orbiting debris, and it considers how the rings would have cooled Earth's climate. SpaceyKC Posted April 11, 2003 #2 Share Posted April 11, 2003 Interesting article, SaRuMaN. The images at sunrise and sunset sound like they'd be beautiful, but I'm glad we don't have the rings now.
schadeaux Posted April 11, 2003 #3 Share Posted April 11, 2003 It's really not so far fetched an idea. Rings have been found around Jupiter, Neptune, and Uranus. Of course, these are all gas giants. Any information on rocky surfaced planets like Earth or Mars having rings? I think rings around Earth would be cool. Bet the tanning bed industry would boom!
