Maltese Cart Ruts

I am doing a project/documentation on Cart Ruts, focusing on those in Malta. I was wondering what kind of theories people have on it? I read some on the internet, but only by researchers and specialists, but no theory from someone who maybe researches these things as a fun activity? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Uhm, maybe the ruts were caused by cart or wagon wheels?

Care to expand on what you are trying to explain?
