aztek Posted April 23, 2018 #27 Share Posted April 23, 2018 i always thought a salad is chopped veggies, and may be nuts, meat, (or fruits, if it is a fruit salad) it does not have to contain lettuce at all. in fact most salads bars here in nyc put lettuce in salad bowl, but i thought it is there to keep veggies from drying, and fill the bowl, not that it's meant to be eaten, i was told by someone in the industry, not to eat it, it is almost never washed. i always pick ones with spinach leaves, not lettuce. at home we never buy or eat lettuce, only fresh chopped veggies go into salads.
HollyDolly Posted April 25, 2018 #28 Share Posted April 25, 2018 You can make a salad without lettuce. chop up broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage ,mushrooms, and summer squash and zucchini. Some people put in raw sugar snap peas or snow peas, but i'm not found of them raw. You can also add onions, cooked peas, kale or whatever cooked or raw veggie you want. Best thing to do if you must have lettuce, is get yourself some sort of pot at Home depot, Lowe's or a plant nursey. Purchase the pot, and buy potting soil and any lettuce plants you see at the garden center, and grow your own.
+susieice Posted May 9, 2018 #29 Share Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) The CDC just issued a stronger warning today. This is a very virulent and dangerous strain of e coli. It has now spread to 4 more states, bringing the total to 29. Of the 149 sickened, 64 were hospitalized, 17 developed a form of kidney failure. Only 1 death has been reported in California. They suggest you eat no romaine at all. It seems people are still being infected and the distribution is getting larger. https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/09/health/romaine-e-coli-outbreak-spreads/index.html Edited May 9, 2018 by susieice
+susieice Posted May 9, 2018 #30 Share Posted May 9, 2018 (edited) Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota and Texas have now joined the list. bison Posted May 10, 2018 Author #31 Share Posted May 10, 2018 My regular grocery store is stocking chopped Romaine lettuce again. The labeling indicates it's from the Salinas Valley, California, so no apparent connection to the problem area in Arizona. I'm not using any Romaine lettuce, though, until the whole matter is resolved. Better safe than sick!
Lilly Posted May 10, 2018 #32 Share Posted May 10, 2018 Yeah, I won’t eat any romaine. The last salad I made had only iceberg and baby spinach for greens. It’s sad because I really like romaine.
+susieice Posted May 11, 2018 #33 Share Posted May 11, 2018 People are also getting Salmonella poisoning from a recall of 200 million eggs that were produced in Indiana. The recall includes 6 states and were sold in several stores, including Walmart. https://patch.com/pennsylvania/easton/s/gf5v7/more-people-sickened-eggs-recalled-pennsylvania-cdc?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_term=health+%26+fitness&utm_campaign=autopost&utm_content=easton-pa
bison Posted May 17, 2018 Author #34 Share Posted May 17, 2018 The problem with Romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona area farms may be about over, due to the end of the the harvesting season there. Production of Romaine lettuce has now shifted to California farms, notably in the Salinas Valley. +susieice Posted June 1, 2018 #37 Share Posted June 1, 2018 (edited) Today the CDC announced another 25 cases of E coli in the US with a total of 5 deaths so far. A total over 200 people sickened, some seriously. I thought this scare was over! They say it was because of the length of time some reports took to get in to the CDC. http://www.ktuu.com/content/news/5-dead-nearly-200-sickened-in-romaine-lettuce-outbreak-484289781.html https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/01/health/e-coli-multistate-outbreak-update-cdc/index.html Edited June 1, 2018 by susieice
