Work on lunar space station to begin in 2019

It's a damn shame we haven't worked out how to make large quantities of Graphene yet. We could be building O'neill cylinders and enormous moon bases for peanuts, instead of faffing about spending christ knows how much on regular space stations. Would still be a step in the right direction if this ever comes to fruition though.

This is a perfect example of how bad NASA is. You have a stationary moon with very low gravity that can be used to house tens of thousands if you wanted. Instead they would rather waste money on a space station orbiting the moon? Why not a moon base? It makes absolutely no sense. Another fine example of why NASA needs to either be deleted from existence or retrofitted. These people have no idea what they are doing. Totally mismanaged and absolutely mismanaged.

What a load of anti-NASA drivel.

The moon is stationary? What are you talking about, the moon is not stationary it orbits the Earth.

Why not a moon base? Because the technology to land large enough components on the moon to build a moon base does not yet exist and will take some time (and a lot of money) to develop. An orbiting lunar station can, however, be built with technology which already exists.

NASA has been directed by the President of the USA to return USA astronauts to the moon. The path they have been directed to follow involves the construction of an INTERNATIONAL orbiting station followed by a return to the moon and then on to Mars.

NASA has also been directed to make use of commercial organisations in the landing of material on the moon (in much the same way as freight, and soon astronauts are ferried to the ISS by commercial companies). These companies are currently developing technology which could, one day, be used in building a base on the moon, but it will take time.

The station will allow NASA and it's international partners to develop and test the technology necessary for a permanent moon base, with out the added expensive of actually landing. It will also be useful in developing the technology necessary to build spacecraft capable of taking astronauts to Mars and beyond.

This station you consider to be proof that NASA doesn't know what it is doing is also supported by the Russian space agency Roscosmos and looks highly probable to be supported by the space agencies of Europe, Japan and Canada too. So either ALL of the worlds major space agencies APART from that of China don't know what they are doing or  you don't know what you are talking about. I know which of the options I am going with.

As for mismanagement, you don't seem to realise that the direction NASA takes and the projects it undertakes are at the direction of the President of the US and Congress. If you disagree with it then fine, but blame the government that gives them the instructions not the organisation which follows them.

Well at least NASA is getting back to its original charter...space science and exploration rather than the diversion it had for years pertaining to Earth political science.   Nice to see their eye back on the ball.  Now whether this is a good idea or not is debatable, but at least it's in the right general direction...that is...space!

So how would you do it? If you say something like this please make a case against it
