But the Trump administration contends the tribes are a race rather than separate governments, and exempting them from Medicaid work rules

..........

The tribes insist that any claim of “racial preference” is moot because they’re constitutionally protected as separate governments, dating back to treaties hammered out by President George Washington and reaffirmed in recent decades under Republican and Democratic presidents alike, including the Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama administrations.

“The United States has a legal responsibility to provide health care to Native Americans,” said Mary Smith, who was acting head of the Indian Health Service during the Obama administration and is a member of the Cherokee Nation. “It’s the largest prepaid health system in the world — they’ve paid through land and massacres — and now you’re going to take away health care and add a work requirement?”

Trump trying to reneg on a centuries old deal.

Providing Medicaid to Indigenous people doesn't even come close to providing enough compensation for what was taken from them in the first place

Cmon Trump cough up the health care ..!

I think it probably has more to do with his decades long fued with Native Americans and their more recent conflict with regards to the proposed wall being built on their territory.

This adds a little perspective to the decision (and a little sting)

Another point of contention for the tribes is that HHS’ civil rights office — while rejecting Native Americans’ Medicaid request on grounds that they’re seeking an illegal preference — simultaneously announced new protections sought by conservative religious groups.

I bet he gets punched in the nose on this one.  I understand the general idea but Native Americans are in a different class of citizen altogether where this is concerned.  Healthcare for them is NOT welfare, it should be a pre-paid obligation for all time.

and I still won't accept it and pay for my own doctors......of course that is because of the pre-paid pill and unnecessary surgery pushers....

Native casinos hit him in the pocketbook. He didn't like the rivalry.

Native peoples have been conquered and subjucated all over this world.  Natives conquered other natives before them.  Requirements to work for govt. handouts is not a bad thing for a people as a whole.  Becoming shackled to the government and habitually dependent on provisions is.

I don’t know man. I grew up in poverty. My parents grew up in poverty that I could hardly conceive. No one is saying we deserve free medical.

Seems to me it’s time for natives to join the rest of America.

It's not about what you or I perceive to be right or fair. It's a legal obligation that is protected by your own Constitution.

I am.

There are a million and one reasons why "free" medical makes sense. It makes sense fiscally, it makes sense morally and considering what we're learning about the effects poverty and poor health management have on the brain its actually a straight up national security issue.

It doesnt make sense fiscally really, or any sense for that matter under the current circumstances.

There are benefits to free medical care or universal care or whatever you want to call it but it also has serious downsides, just like how private medical care has benefits and serious downsides, but till the issue of drug companies jacking up their price of medicine in America and reform to sueing for medical malpractice is done then nothing is really going to change, cost will still be astronomical.  All universal care will do is shift the cost from those who are ill to everyone.  For example universal health care won't help that epipens cost over $600 in America while in the UK they cost $69 while costing the company only about $15 to make of which most of the cost is on the case.

To make the post on topic more or less, I personally think the Native American should just fully integrate already, what real benefit is there to keeping the tribal government stuff going at this point in time.
