More fissures, now there are 21. A massive ash cloud reaching 12,000 ft and shooting lava have been emitted. Hawaii is on red alert. That means an eruption is imminent.

@Socks Junior I know a couple of idiots who bought a house at Leilani. My sister told them they were idiots when they bought it. But from the map the whole corner looks like a trap flow.

Is this the same way the Siberian traps formed when it's craton was over the Atlantic Rift?

Siberian Traps were similar in genesis - a deep mantle plume - but vastly different in scale. (This depends, of course, on whether you believe in deep mantle plumes at all.)

Prevailing wisdom holds that the initial impingement of plumes produces a massive Large Igneous Province of basalt flows (the Columbia River basalts, or the Deccan Traps of India). Then, as the cratons/plates move, we see a nice trail as the plume continues to bore through, but with less emplacement. The Snake River plain, and the Indian Ocean show that trail. Similarly, the Hawaiian-Emperor chain shows a nice trail - but no initial LIP. It may have been subducted up in the Aleutians, I'd guess. Have to check.

Plume morphology is modelled as a balloon on a string. Massive initially, then the string follows. That's Hawaii now.

Of course, the Siberian traps do not show a distinct plume trail. Some ad-hoc explanations for this have been proposed such as the thickness of the lithosphere there in the craton, but...unsatisfying. I think the associated plume is thought to be Iceland.

One thing to note, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is a younger phenomenon. That formed because of pressure release melting in the upper mantle. Plumes are thought to be originating in the lower mantle way deep down. Iceland is right on the ridge now, but that wasn't always the case, and the two are distinct phenomena.

That's how Bonofiglio explained it. It's been so long since I had his class. The Siberian Craton was parked where Iceland is now but I forgot about the mantle plume part.

The sounds in that video are unreal! I fear she's gonna blow bad. Hope everyone stays safe and heeds the warnings.

Reports are getting worse. Cruise ships are avoiding the area and tourism has halved since the eruption intensified.

There's some videos in this link:

Police are warning tourists and locals not to risk their lives for the perfect selfie with lava spewing from the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, but many are ignoring pleas to stay away.

Frustrated police warned thrillseekers not to enter the area around the erupting volcano or go near the more than 20 fissures where lava is flowing from.

Residents are given cards to let them get back to their homes but they are regularly loaned to others trying to get dangerously close to the action.

An explosive eruption has occurred on Thursday morning with the ash plume reaching 30,000 ft. It is unknown how many more will happen or how strong they will be. I hope everyone listens to the warnings. Stay safe Hawaii.

I've heard, loosely, that should this volcano fully errupt, that a 12-mile radius would be in serious danger.

Theoretical worse-case at 20 miles.

Thus, Hawaii will well survive.

Another explosion has taken place and a fissure has developed a faster moving lava flow. Four people have been helicoptered out to safety with approximately 40 homes being surrounded. The residents have been told to stay in a safe place until rescue can come in.

Hmm... where, exactly, is a "safe place" when you are surrounded by molten lava ? :(

Wondered about that myself. I would think they'd be flying them out immediately.

Large clouds of laze are spreading up to 15 miles from where the lava is meeting with the ocean. This cloud contains toxic acid and small pieces of glass.

I just wanted to start a thread where I can share pictures/news of the volcano eruption in Hawaii. I actually find this to be very interesting and pretty.

-- probably because there is 4,797 miles between me and Hawaii. :P

"Kīlauea has been erupting nearly continuously since 1983 and has caused considerable property damage, including the destruction of the town of Kalapana in 1990."

So I don't know why people have been purchasing houses around this thing whilst knowing its been erupting for 35 years. Is there a such thing as Volcano insurance?

The Hawaiian Archipelago was created as the Pacific Plate moved slowly over a persistent mantle plume which created hot spots and the series of volcanic eruptions forming the islands, one by one. The big island was created by and is situated over such a hot spot.

For five days, they had taken turns hosing down area homes whenever molten rocks — flung from Fissure 17 — landed on them. For five days, Clinton had successfully avoided the projectiles.

On Friday, though, a piece of molten rock struck Clinton in the ankle as he was on the phone. The power of it pushed him off his feet and onto a couch that was promptly lit aflame.

Bruh... tf are you on to be spending that long avoiding lava-hail.

It knocked him backward on the third-floor lanai of his neighbor’s home on the eastern end of the Big Island, where most people had evacuated amid three weeks of heightened volcanic activity on Kilauea.

Come on now. That is so unnecessary. Now first responders gotta come rescue lieutenant dan from that lava battle field. Risking their lives to save this brochacho.
