Dog 'adopts' nine orphaned ducklings

A dog has "adopted" nine ducklings after their mother disappeared.

Fred, a 10-year-old labrador has become "dad" to the baby birds at Mountfitchet Castle, a tourist attraction near Stansted Airport in Essex.

The ducklings' mother was nowhere to be found when staff noticed them waddling around alone, but "Fred... immediately took to them and has been babysitting ever since."

They have even followed him into the castle moat for a swim, staff said.

awww...what a great dog.

My cocker spaniel might do the adopting thing for a while, but once they try flying i would not trust him not to make a dinner out of them...he is a hunting dog, although very loving, once the birds start flapping he goes crazy.

Just now, seanjo said:

Duckling's mum disappeared?...I'd suspect the dog right away...Labs are intelligent, he's just waiting for them to grow so he gets a bigger mouthful...

You might be on to something.

I dunno. Old Fred doesn't look like an evil genius...

Looks more like he's catching a few rays while contemplating the finer things in dog life to me B)

I think another critter did in the Mom...Fred has just stepped up to the plate for the little guys.

I think Fred is a real creme puff (not an evil genius).

This is nothing short of duck abuse! :o

How will they ever fit in with other ducks, if they are constantly barking, hiding bones, and retrieving squeaky toys?

I'd like to see those duckies start rolling over and play dead I would ...
