Prof. Hawking's words to be beamed into space

Still Waters

The words of renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking will be beamed into space as a "message of peace and hope", his family has said.

His words have been set to an original score by composer Vangelis, famous for his Chariots of Fire film theme.

The music will be beamed towards the nearest black hole following a service of thanksgiving for Professor Hawking's life at Westminster Abbey on Friday.

He died in March, aged 76, after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

Didn't Hawking say (several times) we shouldn't be beaming messages out into space, as he felt that attempting to draw alien attention wouldn't end well for us?

At a guess, the black hole in the center of our galaxy is approx.50,000 light years away. the closest we know of is 3000 light years away according to the article..

That black hole is 3300 to 3500 light years away. The memorial signal will reach a great many other stars and planets before it gets there. This is especially so, since this black hole lies along the plane of our galaxy, maximizing the number of stars that the radio beam will reach.
