UM-Bot Posted April 14, 2003 #1 Share Posted April 14, 2003 Researchers at the University of Nottingham have used magnetism to make solid objects such as coins float in the air. Scientists have already proven strong, varying magnetic fields could exert an upward force on objects in their path. The Nottingham team found this effect could be dramatically enhanced in cold, magnetised oxygen. Magnetic levitation occurs when the magnetic force is strong enough to overcome gravity and balance a body's weight. Loonboy Posted April 14, 2003 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2003 This really isn't new, is it? I'm sure that a train was invented years ago by an English inventor from the north west which basically floated over its tracks by the use of magnetism... I think... j6p Posted April 14, 2003 #3 Share Posted April 14, 2003 Using magnetism for levitation is old but I think this "cold oxygen" thing is kinda new. I'm fascinated with this approach. I have to find out how cold the oxygen has to be in order to achieve the desired effect, my head is spinning with this news. The implications are astounding.
