Thai teenage football team trapped in cave

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Navy Seal divers and other rescuers have re-entered a partly flooded cave in northern Thailand to search for 12 boys and their football coach who have been missing for three days in the large caverns.

Divers have been trying to move through the chambers of the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex, but flooding has hindered their progress. Officials have also been trying to find other ways in, using helicopters and search parties on foot to find holes that might exist in the ceilings of the cave.

The boys, aged 11-16, and their coach, 25, were believed to have entered the cave in Chiang Rai province late on Saturday afternoon. The search began after a mother reported that her son did not return from football practice that day.

Who takes an 11-year-old cave diving?

I hope they are all safe and will be found very soon.

What I'm curious about tho, is why would the soccer coach go with a team of kids into these caves in the first place ?...was it some type of adventure / trek that had been previously planned ?... if so, were the parents of these kids informed about it (where under normal circumstances) their permission would be needed ?

After all, twelve kids to have to keep an eye on by only one adult would be somewhat of a challenge in my opinion, especially in an environment such as deep caves and water filled caverns.

It was unexpected.

Parents started calling each other and the police when kids never came home from football practice, then local authorities found all their bikes and gear outside the caves.

U.S. Navy SEAL divers? Whoa...

With them being an integral part of the search/rescue efforts, I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the victims will be found, whether dead/injured/alive.

Thanks for those links El.

This all sounds very serious indeed, especially as more time goes by without finding any of them. What on earth was this coach thinking when he entered these caves with these kids ?.....and what I also find strange is how they left their backpacks, football shoes etc....behind as well. So I take it they (or some) must have gone in bare feet ?.... Even if they have water, they must be starving by now. It's all very odd indeed. Lets hope they will soon be found and no harm has come to them.

Huh. I guess not just the U.S. has "SEAL's"

Park officials, local police and 17 members of the SEAL diving team from the Royal Thai Navy were deployed to assist in the search and rescue efforts.

Thai authorities are stepping up their search for a team of young footballers missing in a cave.

Specialists aim to pump out water to allow navy divers to operate in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex, a Thai minister said.

Interior minister Anupong Paojinda said divers could proceed only when enough water had been pumped out, so there was breathing space between the water and the ceiling.

I speak from experience when I say the pain of not knowing how your loved one is in a situation like this is unbearable.

My heart truly goes out to the families.

Yeah. I've been loosely keeping-up with the news on this, and so far the rescue team have found "fresh footprints" within part of the cave tunnel.

My prayer's are with all as well...

I think we are going onto day 5 now since they've gone missing. I wonder how the younger children are fairing...as their ages ranged from as young as 11 years old. Hopefully we'll hear some good news soon that they have all been found alive... and at least generally well. Their families must be going through a living hell.

Today: Things aren't going too well :(

Quote

Rising water levels have interrupted efforts to find 12 teenagers and their football coach trapped in a cave in northern Thailand.

Pumping was halted and with the entrance flooded, Thai navy divers had to stop their search.

The boys aged 11 to 16 and their 25-year-old coach entered the cave on Saturday and there has been no contact with them since.

The rescue operation is now focusing on finding another way into the cave.

Thai authorities said they planned to drill a narrow shaft into the mountain to create an alternative entry point.

Experts think there is a good chance the limestone cave does have other entrances. Spotting those in the vast forest-covered mountainside is extremely difficult though.

Presuming that the rescue effort has some hope of end result, I yet do not know if the cave dynamics at that location, with the water, will present survivors or fatal victims.

Perhaps both.

This is a very difficult situation, obviously, for all those involved.

May God Bless and assist the rescuer's and the victims in this terrible tragedy.

Update:

Quote

Packages have been dropped through a shaft in a mountainside in the hope of reaching 12 boys and their football coach trapped in a cave in Thailand.

Twenty packages filled with water, food, medicine, torches and a note addressed to the missing team were dropped down a fissure in the cave on Friday.

But police are not sure exactly where the boys are.

Drilling a hole and dropping in supplies blindly sounds like an act of desperation, unfortunately

Any updates? I'm hoping for a happy ending but not expecting one. Caves are one of the few things that creep me out. :/

After I first read Still Waters latest update...my first impression was that they must have found these boys hence dropping food supplies down a fissure for them.

My heart sank somewhat after realising that this was only a random drop of supplies in the hope they may come across the packages.

Each day that passes, things seem to becoming more grim with this search of finding them all alive. All we really have left now is hope that we'll hear some good news soon.

Some progress being reported today:

Thai navy divers have reached closer to a flooded cave in northern Thailand where 12 boys and their football coach have been trapped for more than a week.

Rear Admiral Apakorn Yuukongkaew, commander of the Thai Navy Seals, said his divers had reached "chamber three" in the cave complex.

But on Saturday US navy Seals reached a T-junction in the depths of the cave just two or three kilometres (one to two miles) from where the boys are believed to be, said the Chiang Rai governor, Narongsak Osottanakorn.

Officials said the boys know the site well and have visited it many times before, buoying hopes that they might have trekked to a large airy chamber in the centre.

Great news! now they just have to get them out.

"When the medics have evaluated the kids to see if their health is in good condition, we will care for them until they have enough strength to move by themselves, and then we will evaluate the situation on bringing them out again later," the governor said.
