Stolen DoE plutonium and cesium still missing

A new report claims that nuclear materials stolen from US Department of Energy employees last year in Texas are still missing.

The Center for Public Integrity reports that plutonium and cesium were stolen from the officials' car when they stayed overnight at a hotel.

Authorities have not publicly commented on the theft, CPI reports, but a DOE official confirmed it to the BBC.

11th sentence into the article... The nuclear materials are coin-sized and have negligible amounts of radioactivity, according to the DOE official.

There are probably kilos of the stuff missing in Russia and the former Republics.

FWIW, I expect a nuke to be set off by a terror group in the U.S. at some point.  First guess would NYC.  Most of the world will cheer it as overdue justice.  Just human nature but what goes around always comes around and it will be the beginning of a really bad time for the rest of the planet as well.

WTH has Russia got to do with it, for heaven's sake?

Are you ok with DoE officials leaving any amount of plutonium (one of the most dangerous substances in existence) and cesium (used to make a dirty bomb) in a motel car park in a high crime area?

Here's the last paragraph...

" And in Monday's report, CPI claims that incidents of nuclear materials being unaccounted for have cropped up at all stages of the nuclear arms sector - factories, storage sites, research centres and in transit."

That should be of concern to all Americans. No?

EL, the amount of the substances that are missing in your example are mentioned to be negligible in your own article.  I'm not making light of the problem in general.  Obviously, it's a serious, potentially catastrophic problem in total.  THIS particular instance is simply not any more serious than the loss of industrial source losses that happen occasionally.  The REAL dangers are to be found in the black markets for lost and unaccounted for materials in the former Soviet Republics.

ETA:  "Industrial" source - a closed container of radioactive materials used in industrial x-ray.
