HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) - The Las Cruces Catholic Diocese says the tears reportedly found on a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe were made of olive oil, but the church has not ruled out a miracle.

These hoaxes anger me. They take advantage of people's desperation who travel to these sites and make ridiculous donations in the hope that they will receive Divine aid.

Sounds like all religions.

Hmm ..... how did that work then? Is there some device hidden inside her head which has been filled up with olive oil, which has a pump on it and a hidden line running from it to a hidden person who gently pumps out some tears during the service? On the one hand, I find it almost impossible to believe she was actually crying, but on the other hand, how was the ruse set up so that it wouldn't be discovered before, during or after?

Kitchen magic. There are several substances that are soft solids at refrigerator or freezer temperature, which are more or less colorless in their solid form (or if colored, blend well with the intended surface), and which are liquid at room temperature. Dry ice is readily available, if you need something colder than a typical kitchen freezer.

Solidify the stuff. Smear it on the object you want to cry, bleed, or otherwise ooze. Wait for it to warm up, and there you are.

Honey is apparently popular for religious pictures, well chosen pig fat works for bleeding. I did try olive oil once for "proof of concept." I found it awkward to work with and not very convincing as any bodily fluid, but then I didn't look at it with the eyes of faith, either.

(There's an alternate M.O. for porous statues, where you just douse 'em with low viscosity things like milk or even water, and the stuff will "sweat out" over time.)

Of course not. It's not like this is more fake than all the other miracles. It's as genuine as anything else they're pitching.
