I thought the Spaniards killed them off with force & diseases. The Mayans never saw guns & cannons so they're defense was limited

The Mayan are still there but their vast civilization collapsed to never raise back to it's prime. The Spaniards cause them to drop down even more.

But I've also read that during the worst of the drought, the driest areas of the Mayan realms were still flourishing and expanding. More than likely the drought just exasperated existing conflicts / wars etc imho.
