Britain facing post-Brexit home care crisis

Recommended Posts

Women will be forced to quit their jobs to look after ill or ageing relatives if the supply of EU care workers is severed after Brexit, the Department of Health has warned.

In a worst-case scenario, there could be 28,000 fewer workers in the care sector in England five years after leaving the European Union if employers were no longer able to recruit European Economic Area (EEA) staff, it says.

Its report, a response to the call for evidence issued by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), says women in particular will be forced to take up the slack.

There has already been a mass exodus of foreign NHS workers and contract staff, and it can only get worse after Brexit.

Let's face it. People got manipulated into making a decision that would have far-reaching impacts they weren't told about.

They were told there were problems, and there always are. Nothing's perfect.

But things can always be way worse, too.

And I think that was kind of the point of Brexit.

You think the people pushing it didn't know about all this stuff?

They had Cambridge Analytica.

How do we manage to have non EU nationals working in the NHS at present?

If we can employ doctors from India, nurses from Nigeria why can't we employ from Europe?

What's this mystical force they talk of that's going to stop people from Europe working in the UK?

People no longer want to come.

"Just 800 EU nurses came to the UK last year, compared to 6,382 in 2016/17 and 9,389 in the year of the Brexit vote. Nearly 4,000 nurses left last year.

There were 690,278 nurses and midwives registered in the UK at March 2018, a decrease of 495 on the previous year. This comes at a time when the NHS is pulling out all the stops to recruit staff for 40,000 vacant posts.

This week the Department of Health and Social Care announced a deal with the Jamaican government inviting nurses to the UK to do NHS placements, in order to increase the workforce by 5,500 staff.

Meanwhile, a government plan to boost the number of trainee nurses by replacing NHS-funded bursaries with £9,000 a year fees and loans has caused a drop of 700 students last year."

What impact as a wage freeze had, plus the new criteria in working in the NHS as a nurse. Came into force August 2017.

Just more project fear cow poo, employing care workers from people who've just wandered into the country isn't a good way to employ people for this type of work anyway, we advertise for staff in many countries including Europe why won't it continue after independence day.

What's wrong with that, some excellent nurses come from Jamaica and were doing so long before we had free movement in the EU.

It's nowhere near enough.

From last winter, "Patients 'dying in hospital corridors'"  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42572116

From April:  "Parts of the NHS are hiring only one nurse for every 400 jobs advertised, show new figures that reveal the extent of nursing staff shortages in England"..  https://www.nursingtimes.net/news/workforce/extent-of-nurse-shortages-revealed-in-new-recruitment-figures/7022928.article

From the Royal College of Nursing:  "After Brexit the NHS could be hit by a shortage of more than 40,000 nurses by 2026."

This is according to modelling by the Department of Health leaked to the Health Service Journal.

The RCN has warned that such a fall would leave the NHS “unsafe”. The leak has prompted serious concern among ministers and officials at Richmond House as the UK heads into Brexit negotiations.  https://www.rcn.org.uk/news-and-events/news/worst-case-scenario-shortage-of-42000-nurses

That's just SILLY.

In a post-Brexit environment, it is the UK who decides who can - and can not - come into the UK and work.

If they are short of Care Workers, they will just give them all visas and welcome them in. End of.

Nursing shortage 1995, again 2001. Was that Brexit. I think not. I'm still waiting for some one to answer the question why we'll be unable to employ anyone from Europe Post-brexit.

I gave you an answer and stats and a link to back it up.  They don't want to come.

You should tell the Department of Health and the Royal College of Nursing.  They are the one's most "silly".

Britain is full of Nationalists?  Maybe they don't want to end up involved in mass murder, like at Gosport or mid-Staffordshire?

Ask the Dept of Health!

From what I read in the article, it sounds like a horrible environment to work in.  Nurses, in my experience, tend to be of a personality that wants to be caregivers or they don't last long in the profession.  That said, if all they can expect, whatever wages they receive, is constant overwork and high stress, few would want to knowingly take that on.  I'd be interested to know how long the average new hire from outside the UK lasts in the job.

It's because of the bad wages and the working hours plus the stress and responsibility involved in being a nurse.
