In a worst-case scenario, there could be 28,000 fewer workers in the care sector in England five years after leaving the European Union if employers were no longer able to recruit European Economic Area (EEA) staff, it says. Its report, a response to the call for evidence issued by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), says women in particular will be forced to take up the slack. They were told there were problems, and there always are. Nothing's perfect. But things can always be way worse, too. And I think that was kind of the point of Brexit. If we can employ doctors from India, nurses from Nigeria why can't we employ from Europe? "Just 800 EU nurses came to the UK last year, compared to 6,382 in 2016/17 and 9,389 in the year of the Brexit vote. Nearly 4,000 nurses left last year. There were 690,278 nurses and midwives registered in the UK at March 2018, a decrease of 495 on the previous year. This comes at a time when the NHS is pulling out all the stops to recruit staff for 40,000 vacant posts. This week the Department of Health and Social Care announced a deal with the Jamaican government inviting nurses to the UK to do NHS placements, in order to increase the workforce by 5,500 staff. In a post-Brexit environment, it is the UK who decides who can - and can not - come into the UK and work. If they are short of Care Workers, they will just give them all visas and welcome them in. Nurses, in my experience, tend to be of a personality that wants to be caregivers or they don't last long in the profession. That said, if all they can expect, whatever wages they receive, is constant overwork and high stress, few would want to knowingly take that on.
