Trump's 'dirty war' on media draws editorials

What have the papers said?

  • Starting with the Boston Globe itself, the editorial there, headlined Journalists Are Not The Enemy, argued that a free press had been a core American principle for more than 200 years
  • The New York Times chose the headline A Free Press Needs You, calling Mr Trump's attacks "dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy". It published excerpts from dozens more publications beneath
  • The New York Post - hardly a left-leaning paper - answered the Globe's call by saying "Who are we to disagree?" adding: "It may be frustrating to argue that just because we print inconvenient truths doesn't mean that we're fake news, but being a journalist isn't a popularity contest. All we can do is to keep reporting." But it also said: "Will this make a difference? Not one whit"
  • The Philadelphia Inquirer said its city was the birthplace of US democracy, writing: "If the press is not free from reprisal, punishment or suspicion for unpopular views or information, neither is the country. Neither are its people"
  • Opinion writers at McClatchy put out an editorial for the 30 daily newspapers it runs, including the Miami Herald, saying they hardly ever spoke with one voice but were doing so now. It said "enemies of the people" was "what Nazis called Jews. It's how Joseph Stalin's critics were marked for execution"

Another paper to join the campaign was the Topeka Capital-Journal which said of Mr Trump's attack on the media: "It's sinister. It's destructive. And it must end now." The paper was one of the few to endorse Mr Trump in 2016.

BBC

"The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.” - 1984 by George Orwell

“What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening,” - Trump, last month

The "media" is very upset at being criticised by Donald Trump, and they are "fighting back".

At no point does the collective media every seem to have analysed its partisan attacks on Trump, and wondered whether perhaps there is a REASON why President Trump has been  "attacking" them.

Indeed. I find it hilarious. The Media are being treated like they treat other people. But worse than THAT... President Trump's REAL crime is to completely sideline them, and to tweet to his public directly. They are squealing like pigs !

Umm.... the Media are squealing like pigs, that is, not the public.

Well, except for the Liberals and Lefties... they ARE squealing.

First thing a rising dictator does is to shut down the free press.

It's not like we don't know this.

You can't have people saying stuff that's true.

The so called "Free Press" has always been the Fourth Estate in this country bordering on the 5th Column.

Trump has done nothing to discredit the Free Press as they did that to themselves long before Trump made it popular.

CNN since it's inception has always been a joke.

None of them have any credibility as to reporting the truth or facts and I can attest to this going back to Cronkite "The most trusted man in America" .....he wasn't.

He is, indeed and his supporters love him for it.  The media wouldn't be bothering with such a campaign unless they were hemorrhaging revenue or were seeing support slipping.  The bottom line is that about half the voting public is content to feed at their trough of hate and derision and the other half of us recognize them for the disgusting hypocrites they are.  The media has become a Globalist 5th column and they need to be shamed, ridiculed and resisted.  To hell with them and what they tell us we should think.

This simply isn't true. It's sure bandied about often enough, but outwith foreign policy and war in particular, it has no basis in reality.

You've always had reporters or media establishments who were critical or supportive of certain governments, but until the Rupert Murdoch (along with the likes of Hannity) and Trump arrangement that we're seeing now, you couldn't ever claim that the media was another arm of government.

The irony of your claim, when we're seeing what you say in action for the first time now with Trump, is astounding. Zero self awareness.

This is before all the Russia related stuff even comes into it. Stuff we know he's been lying about for years. A scandal of a magnitude unheard of in US politics.

Then there's his sexually assaults of women, his documented racism, his treatment of immigrants. How could they not report on that stuff?

All of this is Trump's doing. His own fault. When he attacks to try to discredit the press or his critics it's because he cannot counter what they say with the facts and the trut. It's as simple as that. He's not a victim in this.

Oh, I'm sure he's a sinner, as well as sinned against. But I remember stories in the Washington Post and the New York Times during the campaign. (before they EU firewall came down) They where clearly anti-Trump, and wrote stories against him that where clearly slanted, and flirted very closely with outright lies. They started it ! :)

They reported on the many times he contradicted himself in public and the scandals he has had over the years.

When someone does that, the press is obligated to report and inform the public, such as when he posted about a Muslim ban on his site and then deleted it later. That happened.

He encouraged people to beat up a black guy and protesters. These things have been documented.

They didn't "start it." They documented it.

Couldn't agree with you more.   https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/08/24/breitbart-hillary-clinton-attack-attack-freedom/

The reason Breitbart is the target is not just because our executive chairman temporarily stepped down from that position to become the new CEO of the Trump campaign. Far more important is the fact that Breitbart editor Peter Schweizer has exposed the Clinton Foundation and Hillary Clinton’s pay-for-play corruption at the State Department with his bestselling book, Clinton CashClinton’s false accusations of racism are typical — and show her desperation.

The attacks will not stop with Breitbart News. Hillary Clinton backs changes to the First Amendment to shut up businesses; her party has proposed legislation that would let the government decide who is a journalist and who is not.

I am surprised that it was only 300 media outlets parroting each other.

That's pretty much a normal day for them;

So, is recorded proof enough, or it is YouTub that is to blame?

That one was VERY short, how about more detail, you ask?

Gotcha covered!

It's frustrating that I can no longer easily access the WaPO or NYT to post quotes. There where stories there that build innuendo upon rumour upon "unnamed sources" to present Candidate Trump in a poor light. There would be an unattributed accusation, which - a few sentences later - was cited as "proof" of yet ANOTHER unattributed accusation, and so forth, building an edifice of dodgy accusations on a foundation of unattributed and unverified sources. They where classics of misdirection and slander.

Trump lies constantly. Listen to the Steel jobs example above.

(Paraphrasing)

Trump: we're opening 7 new steel Mills.

Steel guys: one forge in one mill is being refurbished.

Trump: It's totally 8 new steel mills now

Steel guys: No new steel mills are opening

Trump: 9 now. 9 new steel mills incoming

Steel guys: Again, there are no new steel mills being built

This is constant, all day every day for nearly 2 years. Should the President just be allowed to go unchecked for blatant lying?

How about his failed admittance about his tax returns?  A public figure in his position should have no problems in showing the American public he has nothing to hide.  It doesn't appear Americans are interested to know wether their billionaire President has made his fortunes honestly.

That doesn't add up, doesn't it ? If there was anything dodgy about his Tax returns, then your Inland Revenue would have already called him out on it. (and - indeed - put him in prison :D )

This is the standing orders of the Progressives.

“What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening,” - Trump, last month

This has been true long before Trump was even born.  It’s just that the MSM is no longer hiding that it is the propaganda arm of the Progressives.  And Trump is fighting back for all of us.

It would have been leaked out by the Deep State two years ago.

The MSM isn’t reporting, it is attacking.  When does the MSM report on all the good things happening?  If they can’t twist it to exclude Trump, they ignore it.  The MSM has reneged on being the free press.  It is in violation of the 1st Amendment.

You seriously consider this lying?  You are very disingenuous.  The number isn’t what is important.  It is that steel jobs are coming back.  This is a guy that deals with numbers and estimates all the time.  He knows what numbers are important and which ones aren’t.  Don’t you think he is privy to information you aren’t?  For example, there’s probably a stat somewhere that says that it takes 500 to man a foundry.  He’s probably also seen estimates that they expect 3000 new jobs in the manufacturing sector.  Do the math, that’s 6 new mills.  No, it may not turn out exactly like that but so what?  It is positive news and I think Trump is well within his rights to embellish.  He is also this nation’s cheerleader-in-chief and we need a bit of good news.  But the Progressives can’t allow that and so they send their attack dogs.  Do you ever see the MSM report “President Trump is optimistic about manufacturing jobs returning”?  Hell no!  It’s that he lies.  This is treason folks and people will pay, karma will see to it.

You know what strikes me?  After 8 years of weekly unscripted press conferences in the rose garden under Bush, Obama did nothing but tightly scripted one on one interviews with select talking heads for 8 years (we know they were tightly scripted because there is footage of Obama yelling at one guy for asking the wrong question and he never got to interview him again) and not one word of complaint from the press.

One example of the free press being shut down please?  And not taking questions is not shutting them down, Obama took zero questions for 8 years.
