Fears as pigs now outnumber people in Spain

Recommended Posts

There are more pigs in Spain than humans for the first time, according to figures released by the country’s environment ministry, with 50 million pigs to 46.5 million humans.

The figures show an increase of about 9 million animals since 2013 and there are growing concerns about the environmental impact of an industry that produced more than 4m tonnes of pork products and generated €6bn (£5.4bn) last year.

The soaring pig population is a key factor in making livestock the fourth-largest generator of greenhouse gas emissions after transport, electricity generation and industry.

There are only 4.2 million pigs in the UK, compared to 66.6 million humans.

I'm hoping they'll eventually be able to make lab-created meat.

If we last that long.

Animal farm. This is how it starts out. Before you know it they've taken over the farm.

It's certainly one way to keep the Muslims out of the country.

This maybe a dumb answer but wouldn't it be wise to eat as much as you can then maybe trade the meat with another country for goods we need?

Spain does export pork- it ranks third in the world after Germany and the U.S. for exports. Demand for Spanish pork is high.

Oh no haha,

What I was saying is that it is our large consumption and demand for meat that creates all the pig farms.

Yeah but do yours make Danish  bacon ? I think not !

The English couldn't function properly without their Danish bacon and Lurpak butter. Our export of bacon and butter to the UK basically funded our industrialisation in the 19th and early 20th century. Here ends today's free history lesson. :P

They make some of the best pork in the world. We export ours to the UK and imports from Spain.
