OK, I'm just a dumb bunny, but I thought radio waves traveled at the speed of sound.

Could you explain, in little words, how radio waves jump to light speed?

Best and easiest way I can describe the difference is that light waves are traverse, sinusoidal, and they don’t require a medium to travel through. Oh and they are polerised. Hence why light and heat gets to us through space from the Sun.

Soundwaves are longitudinal waves and are caused by changes in pressure and molecular collisions. They are not polerised, all this means that sound has to have a medium to travel through, and will be affected by what material it’s being carried by like the difference when you hear something underwater and above water. So light travels about a million times faster than sound. Sound can't travel in space.

But the easiest way to describe the difference is light is electromagnetic and sound is mechanical.

BBC have a good link, http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_ocr_pre_2011/wave_model/lightandsoundrev1.shtml

Edit: if your interested you should Google search light quanta, wave particle duality.

Except sparky, I never claimed to know everything.

I am aware of my limitations, and really try not to speak on what I don't fully grasp. Unlike some people. :)

I never claimed to know everything either. I just learned enough to grasp a model of reality.

I am proud of what I know! I see it as a gift!

The words in quotations are yours, are they not? And in another thread, your list of scholastic achievements & knowledge was quite expansive. So, either the statement you have just written is false, or your prior statement is false. Either way, you seem prone to embellish things.

I don't know if you can imagine the geometry of the universe, but I can.

It is so unbelievable huge. When we look at the night sky in clear weather without light polution, we only see a fraction of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. A fraction!

That's just our own! There is a MINIMUM of 200.000.000.000 (200 billions) of them.
Maybe even 2.000.000.000.000 (2 trillions)! And you can only see a fraction of 1 !!!

We have been transmitting radio waves, who travel at light speed, for about 100 years. That means there's a 3D halo of radio waves that covers a 200 light year diameter around earth. You'd think that is very very far, but it's not. It's very far from far! It's quite short, seen in the universal scale of things. 200 light years is nothing!

200 light years compared to the Milky Way galaxy

So if God put his ultimate genius creation on Earth, a fuzz of dust in the far corner of a universe so big, that no one can fathom it's size, what's the deal with the rest of the 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999....% of the universe?

Just wondering

Personally I think that the advances in physics and astronomy are more convincing information that we can rely on, which I feel, as others do, that although God cannot be disproven, as there is nothing to disprove, the possibility of gods existance would be around the same odds of the Toothfairy actually existing according to what we do know.

I agree with the thread title, God is extremely unlikely to exist and I think that's the fairest and most respectful position one can take in such a debate. Theres just no reason to convolute good science with myths brought about when mankind hadn't the foggiest as to what was happening around us, and in the universe. It makes no sense to consider such myths as valid. Especially with the directions science is capable of these days.

Or in laymans terms: Sound happens only within matter. No matter no sound. Air is matter.

Light does not need matter to travel.

It's strange. I have spent nearly 10 years on a personal study of psychology and the workings of the mind. And I'll be damned if I know everything. I won't claim I do either. But I know enough and I understand enough, I always learning too. The thing is, it is ignorance that claims they know everything.

The placebo effect absolutely fascinates me. Which is why I call god a placebo at times or more exact a subject-expectancy effect. Which is just a fancy way of saying placebo effect.:P

You didn't read my thread. You read what you wanted to read. I never claimed anything. I just told what I learned, and made a conclusion.

I never claimed to be an expert. I never claimed to know it all. I just made a logic conclusion based on all the knowledge I've gathered. You may doubt that. But I've verified it many times.

I don't know. The way it came off is that you mastered all the subjects in 3 years. The problem right now this is basically cross thread posting which I believe is against forum rules. So I think we should cease and desist before the mods come in with the axes and take our heads off.

Your Honor, the evidence presented points to the subjects motivations, and credibility.

And as far as this topic, I tend to agree with the OP. If there is a biblical type god, then his galactic geography is waaaay off. To place his specialist, and bestest creation out in the boondocks of an average galaxy, in orbit around an average star, on a planet that is mostly inimical to human life (without clothing or shelter) are not the hallmarks of what I would refer to as a beneficial deity.

I say our universe exist within a 4 dimensional tesseract that's a coffee table decoration for a 5th dimensional being, true story.

His? Amusing you refer to God being a male as I didn't know it had a penis. Although I don't understand what the scale of the universe has to do with your hypothesis of God's likelihood. I believe the idea is that God would be outside of space-time, a multi-dimensional being that can observe all possible multi-universes (multiverse) since the big bang. It could compare and position all the possible universe that start with the same initial conditions as this one. Or perhaps observe alternative conditions as well which would be the 7th dimension. Perhaps a higher than 10th dimensional being which tends to be what many like to correlate with a God, where everything possible and imaginable is covered and our brains are not structured to comprehend which some models of string theory show higher than 10 dimensions from which we cannot know. Overall, the scale of our universe doesn't have much to do with one's ability to observe us, not a lot different than how humans are able to know about neutrino's. We can't see them with our physical senses but we are smart enough to create that which can. Maybe God the creator created it's ability to observe us or if it's a high dimensional being, it already has the natural abilities to observe not only us, but our imaginations in past, future and real time all at once from each living organism, can observe all particle states and calculate the outcome for each possibility.

Remember our brains are evolved from that which we exist in. We are designed to survive and procreate which ultimately means redistribute and convert energy. Part of that strategy was to increase intelligence to adapt to changing conditions. Obviously the first time this mutation strategy has worked as it enabled us to control our environment to benefit us as apposed to other creatures that rely on their physical abilities to adapt. Anything beyond our 4 dimensional universe is not in our capabilities, even our eyes are not the best input sensors obviously. But the scale of intelligence has no known limitations, for example, we are 1.2 % DNA difference from chimps. Chimps greatest mental capabilities are equal to that of human toddlers. So now if an Alien species is 1% different from us along that same scale, then our greatest mental capabilities from the likes of Steven Hawekings (RIP) may be equal to their toddlers. Now factor in an entity outside of our known 4 dimensional universe that has no DNA and we cannot measure. We can't even measure the 5th dimension, we can't even measure a particle in a 1 dimensional lattice. We don't know what dark matter (gravity) is, nor dark energy....soooo i'm pretty certain you have no capability to know the existence of a God or not. Theoretically even in an after life, should there be one, you likely still wouldn't know of the existence of a God or not as higher frequencies in scale have no correlation beyond the 10th dimension.

Ultimately God is commonly thought of as creator, as in one that has created our universe. We may even have many collaborators in it's creation, especially likely If we are a simulation, perhaps one simulation of many. Or creation itself may not have self awareness, either way, it doesn't really matter. Keep in mind there is more than one infinite as well. There are many different sizes of infinity called sets and some sets are larger than others, proven by mathematics. Our universe is not really infinite, rather it's expanding, like a balloon as it's a closed system.

Absolutely.

But some things entertain me or give me pleasure. god, or even the contemplation of a god, does not fit into any such category. We are so far beyond such paltry needs.

What doesn't entertain you may entertain someone else. Surprisingly, there is more to the world than you. A paltry need is subjective. Though you probably don't like others preaching about their beliefs to you, likewise others probably don't like those that preach their disbelief all the same. Whether you are Atheist, Apatheist, Omnist or Agnostic, it's a personal matter that is irrelevant to others. It's like telling someone that the way they put their clothes on is questionable or even judging them for how they do it simply because it's not how you do it.

But what if the God that DOES exist is nothing like anything ever realized?

Let alone what someone other than yourself has imagined, which might unfortunately be nothing more than a complete distraction for you.

There can be no real god in this universe, Only a programmer. He or she is not god. They only determine the physical laws.

You mean the scripture that says "God is within you?"

How is it that you're interested in discussing the God that's "within scripture" but not in discussing the God that's within you? If that's the case.

Ever consider that the realities of God can't be personally realized at all until the most fundamental thing of all is put in it's proper place?

Two answers

Who says earth was the only creation  of god or the centre of his creation.  In christian theology earth is the only planet to fall to Satan in the war of the angels.

All the rest remain under the governance of god in a sort of galactic council :)

Earth  is only important in this narrative for two reasons. it is the lost sheep/prodigal son whom the master wants to return to the fold, and his love /care, and it is an example to all other civilizations of what happens when a species separates itself from  god

Second, who says our god has to be a creator being or apply to the whole universe.

It may be an ancient evolved being, and its power may only extend over a part of the universe or galaxy

Most people are both intellectually and intuitively clever, but belief is an evolved cognitive process  Abandon it at your peril as you would be in peril if you abandoned the use of logic.

Logic explains why humans are believers  (because it is a pro survival form of cognition, bringing numerous advantages and benefits)
