Another dandy one that involves a rat is The Copper Bowl by George Fielding Eliot I also recall a series, by M. Peake, that emitted disquiet or ugly or evil vibes on nearly every page - The Gormenghast Trilogy. Have not read yet, but ought to, is Russell Kirk's Ancestral Shadows anthology of scary yet philosophical stories.
