Brazil nuts are brought to you by rodents

WALNUTS ARE GROWN IN ORCHARDS and peanuts can be planted, but it takes a forest to raise a Brazil nut.

Though the crescent-shaped, creamy seeds have found their way into the hearts and mouths of humans around the world, they hail from a hardy, round seed pod found only in the treetops of the Amazon. The global Brazil nut industry is founded on a delicate equation of bees, trees, rainfall, and one particularly toothy rodent.

Most nuts are good freshly cracked, but most nuts are not sold that way. Brazil nuts are a devil of a thing to shell, too.

Some cans of mixed nuts will contain Brazil nuts that are shelled. We have a local candy store that has a nut case where we can get them also. Expensive, but good.

It's coming up on the time of year when mixed nuts in the shell will be sold in supermarkets for the holidays. They include hazelnuts and almonds also.
