Habitat Posted September 25, 2018 #52 Share Posted September 25, 2018 Hopefully so, I thought of him this morning, he isn't a young man, and the recovery would not allow any quick return to normality. And I threw in a few simple prayers, not sure if they listen to me upstairs.

jmccr8 Posted September 28, 2018 #55 Share Posted September 28, 2018 On 9/16/2018 at 5:09 PM, Mr Walker said: Just to let online friends and foes that I won't be online for a while. Hopefully I will return in a few weeks. For some time I have had a leaky heart valve which has been slowly deteriorating. About 10 days ago I had some chest painsvwhich turned out to be muscular but initiated a blood test which showed raised enzyme levels. This was enough for my GP to put me on the Royal Flying doctor service to Adelaide and a luxury suite in the new Royal Adelaide Hospital (and you can see where the billion dollars that it cost was spent) Further tests confirmed the need for open heart surgery to replace one of the four heart valves. Having gone through a similar procedure in 04 Iam not looking forward to it but if successful it will restore full function for another 15 years which should see me out. There is a risk of death which is higher than the first op due to my age and also scar tissue, and apparently it willbe even more painful than before during recovery, but I now know enough to max my drug relief for the first few days. The specialists must be confident as they have asked me to be a case study for final year students as part of their final clinical assessment. Apparently my case history is unusual enough to be worthy of study and I just happened to be here at the right time. Any way just wanted to let members know what was going on and if you dont ever hear from me again you will know what happened. Theoretically only limited internet access is available here and it comes in a very expensive package with television and movies but a young niece who is a student was visiting me and used her student code and pass word to gain access on my tablet. If it is reset I wont be able to get back on but so far it has been working well. Hope to be back on line and bothering people again in a few weeks time. Operation is set for Thursday local time (monday today) Good luck Walker Remember you can't debate me if your dead or I'm on ignore. jmccr8
jmccr8 Posted September 28, 2018 #56 Share Posted September 28, 2018 Hi Walker Couldn't help but notice how many of your opposing debaters have expressed concern for you. See, even though we challenge each other we see you as one of us. Don't let you head get fat we will still argue. jmccr8 3

Popular Post Mr Walker Posted November 2, 2018 Author Popular Post #60 Share Posted November 2, 2018 (edited) update finally home today after 7 weeks in hospital (5 in the new Royal Adelaide and 2 in my local hospital) In that time. I lost 25 kilos (over 3 and a half stone, and one fifth of my body weight) ) I read 79 books ( most online ) The first month was hard, with very little sleep or food. Only in the last 2 weeks have i been eating 3 small meals a day and sleeping 6 to 7 hours a night. Still slowly losing weight, which is good 2 kilos (4.4 pounds) in the last 2 weeks. Had no internet access for the last 2 weeks After a couple of home visits to see how I coped, they let me home today, But i still need regular blood monitoring and some nursing care by a community nurse/ Getting programmes in place for physio, diet and home care. Can drive again from next Wed, which will be a real help Compared with bypass surgery in 2004, there was almost no pain this time, but I think they dosed me up on high levels of oxycodeine. As a result of that, and no sleep for over a week, i had some real weird hallucinations. But i knew what was going on and tried to ignore them They made it impossible to sleep as they began every time i started to fall asleep. They went on for 5 weeks until I was able to get off pain killers and sleeping tablets. I couldn't take paracetamol for a while as it was affecting my liver function but by the time i got to my home hospital i didn't need any pain relief. Can only walk about 300 yards /metres so far, but building on that each day. On the 16th i take an angel fight back to Adelaide for a check up That is a free flight in a small private plane provided through a charitable organisation They fly me to Adelaide and back and also provide transport into the hospital and back to the plane The planes are privately owned and operated and might be crop dusters or recreational planes. In some you have to climb up on the wing to get into the cockpit Not sure about a 240 k 130 mile flight, mostly over water, in a tiny plane but it will be an experience Edited November 2, 2018 by Mr Walker

danydandan Posted November 2, 2018 #67 Share Posted November 2, 2018 @Mr Walker fair play to you for pulling through, expected no less. Hope your wife is ok too I know how harrowing it can be seeing a loved one recover from big surgery. Perhaps my wife's prayers helped a bit.

Mr Walker Posted November 2, 2018 Author #70 Share Posted November 2, 2018 (edited) Thanks Will, JVG, Saru, Ouija ouija, Piney and Dan. I had more people supporting me than I realised; including church groups, extended family, community, and a lot of ex students . IMO prayers can't hurt, and can be an expression of compassion and concern by the one praying. It now ranks officially as the worst two months of my life, but the human body and mind is resilient, and I am already looking back on it as a past experience, which gives me potentially another 15 years of a healthy life.
