'Walt' E. Kurtz Posted September 23, 2018 #1 Share Posted September 23, 2018 (edited) We Found an old tatty sailor hat while cleaning out our friends garage in Deal, UK after she had passed The hat who looked to me as it was to be from the WWII era so we decided to contact the family regarding it and got this great story back. Before our friend met her first husband she was engaged to a sailor on the HMS AMETHYST and was told that he had been killed (sadly we dont know the sailors name). and it later turned out that he had not been killed in action and one day came to visit her and gave her the hat. She was at the time then married to her first husband, I guess you didn´t wait long in those days. I knew nothing about this ship and as the WWII history nerd I am I had to see if I could find anything about the ship on the net. My jaw dropped when I found out that the ship is indeed very famous and this is what I found on the net about the ship. it makes me wonder if there is someone out there who knows if you can restore the hat or what to do with it, execpt wearing it of course ;-) there is no major flaws with it it´s just very tatty and look sunbleached please contact me if you know more about HMS AMETHYST and the hat. What can it be worth? it clearly belongs in a war time museum. Here´s some of my pictures of the Sailor hat. https://www.deviantart.com/impedancer/gallery/61355659/HMS-AMETHYST-SAILOR-HAT What can it be worth? it clearly belongs in a war time museum. Here´s a link about the ship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Amethyst_(F116) PS. I love this!!. Simon the ship cat is one of the few who was awarded the Dickin Medal during WWII. It is awarded to animals that have displayed "conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving or associated with any branch of the Armed Forces or Civil Defence Units Simon the ship cat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_(cat) Dickin Medal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dickin_Medal Edited September 23, 2018 by Avalanche

Grey Area Posted September 23, 2018 #4 Share Posted September 23, 2018 That is fascinating, There are plenty of private collectors for this type of thing if you are interested in making a few quid, otherwise look for a maritime museum they would certainly have restoration advice or if are are feeling particularly altruistic they would gladly take it off your hands. With the story attached to the hat it’s value as a historical artefact is incredible.

At the moment I got to keep the hat since I´m interested in these things however if i would be selling it or let a museum display it i would have to contact the family first. Yes the story is incredible I guess you didn´t wait in those days when it was common that people got killed or lost in the war. I can just imagine the look on her face when the sailor just dropped by to say hello, what a bummer for the sailor. sadly the family cant remember his name but it should not be that hard to get a crew list over who served on the ship during the war. Anyway, there must be a RN/Royal Marine Museum around there. Ah so you were a marine? what did you do there?.
