Eldorado 32,158 #1 Posted October 5, 2018 An eight-year-old found a pre-Viking-era sword while swimming in a lake in Sweden during the summer. Saga Vanecek found the relic in the Vidöstern lake while at her family's holiday home in Jönköping County. The sword was initially reported to be 1,000 years old, but experts at the local museum now believe it may date to around 1,500 years ago. Calibeliever 1,411 #7 Posted October 5, 2018 I had a "didn't this happen last year?" moment. I briefly thought the Alzheimers was finally coming to exact it's payment for a life poorly lived, or it was some sort of Mandela effect ... then I found this: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4848540/Schoolgirl-pulls-4ft-sword-Cornish-lake.html *whew* 5

Seti42 316 #10 Posted October 5, 2018 I hope whatever museum it winds up in gives her some money for it...I mean, when she grows up she'll need a little something for health insurance, an education past high school, etc. Oh, wait...She's not in the US. Nevermind.
pbarosso 338 #11 Posted October 6, 2018 (edited) i wouldnt have it any other way in the US. Id want people to pay for stuff that betters them, that way they value it more and grow up and stop being little entitled babies that think everything should be free......kinda like kids eh? and liberals claim to be people of science, so much for survival of the fittest. MissJatti 4,477 #12 Posted October 6, 2018 And somehow the sword is related to her, then she becomes attached to the sword by a spell binding cast. Later on she becomes the queen, and a legendary warrior. Just like in the books.

Nevermind. Come on. This is about a little girl finding a sword in a Swedish lake. Plenty of other threads for politics. The whole thing is pretty awesome. Might have been an offering rather than lost in battle. A hiker found a viking age sword in ice along a mountain trail in Norway about 3 years ago I think. As more and more people hike and travel there may be more to discover.. Some of the swords found from the 700-1000 ad period associated with battles or graves have been intentionally bent double. Best guess from historians is that if you defeated a foe, you didn't want him coming for you with a good sword in the afterlife. I think this sword was pre-viking. I am hoping to hear more about the metallurgy and form and whether it was deemed to be local or an import. Exciting times.

Not from what I remember but they were sometimes 'sacrificed' (bent, broken or otherwise made unusable). Not always though.
