Mystery object washes up on Seabrook Island

Still Waters

No one seems to know what exactly washed ashore on Seabrook Island this week, but it certainly has many guessing.

The large cylindrical shaped discovery was featured in a Facebook post by Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network.

"Look at this mysterious object that washed ashore in Seabrook Island today! What do you think it is?" the post read.

Can't tell if it's concrete or shaped foam around it. I think it's an underwater buoy. Probably broke up after a hurricane.

That's what it looks like to me. A marker buoy

In another article it's described as:

It also looks like it’s made of concrete, but Marine Mammal network officials say that’s deceiving. Touch it and it feels like “a soft foam,” said the network, adding that it was quickly whisked away by town officials.

A naval marker buoy that lost it's sensor equipment, probably to detect enemy submarines.  Can't leave them laying around.

It's part of a pipeline floater.

That would be my guess too. Nice job on the find.

Bits of UFOs just showing up in weird places. Why does reality always have to imitate Grand Theft Auto? So lazy.

Good job on the solution, but it begs the question - if it's so relatively easy for us forum users to figure out, why is this even a story? Even if that's not exactly what it is, it's obviously man-made.

That's kind of a troubling question. It wasn't much of a mystery to begin with.

Looks kind of like a WW2 flotation device for a submarine net strung across the narrows somewhere, like they had at Pearl, or Scapa Flow.

At first I thought it was a part of one of those exhausts from a space shuttle
