Waspie_Dwarf Posted October 11, 2018 Author #2 Share Posted October 11, 2018 This is the first crewed Soyuz launch failure since 1975. On that occasion the crew survived. Here's hoping for the same out come this time. Recovery crews are on the way to the predicted landing zone.

Habitat Posted October 11, 2018 #4 Share Posted October 11, 2018 Hopefully that news is right, that they have made a safe landing, must be in a very remote place, though.

Habitat Posted October 11, 2018 #6 Share Posted October 11, 2018 Would that capsule have the use of the same means normally used in a landing ?
Waspie_Dwarf Posted October 11, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted October 11, 2018 With Soyuz presumablygrounded for a while and both SpaceX's Crew Dragon and Boeing's Starliner delayed yet again then there is currently no way to launch a new crew to the ISS. I suspect that the current 3 person crew will see their mission extended, but with only 3 on board instead of 5 there will be a deduction in the amount of science that can be carried out. If Soyuz has not returned to flight before this crew has to return home there may need to be a temporary abandonment of the ISS.

Yes, but it will have followed a ballistic profile subjecting the crew to higher than normal g-forces. Edited October 11, 2018 by Waspie_Dwarf typo. Habitat Posted October 11, 2018 #9 Share Posted October 11, 2018 Hopefully they got away with it, one assumes the launch path is across open, relatively flat terrain, if they landed on a mountainside, it could be ugly.

A an aborted launch with the astronauts returning to earth ? 5th April 1975 during an attempt to launch Soyuz 18. The abort happened later in the mission than this. The second stage failed to fully seperated from the third and an abort occurred. The crew landed safely. 26th September 1983 a fire broke out at the base of the launch vehicle attempting to launch the Soyuz T-10 crew. The launch escape system was fired around 90 seconds before launch and pulled the crew to safety. The launch vehicle was destroyed.

Derek Willis Posted October 11, 2018 #23 Share Posted October 11, 2018 How long will it be before the conspiracy theorists claim it was sabotage? There is plenty traffic on the internet saying the hole in the Soyuz docked with the ISS was made by a saboteur.

Why care any more about the opinion of conspiracy theorists on this matter than the opinion of Bobo the clown? It doesn't matter what the event there will always be someone that, with no supporting evidence, will produce a half-baked, paranoid "theory", Why dignify them by acknowledging their existence in an, otherwise, sane thread? 2
