Eldorado Posted October 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 13, 2018 Toxins that may have long-term health implications for the survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire, and thousands of people who live and work nearby, have been identified in the preliminary findings of a study led by one of the world’s leading toxicology experts, the Guardian can reveal. Early results of the study by Prof Anna Stec prompted her to privately urge Public Health England (PHE), the Department of Health, the police and Kensington and Chelsea council to organise a range of tests to ensure any potential health risks can be properly assessed. In briefings to senior health agency staff, Stec said she had found “huge concentrations” of potential carcinogens in the dust and soil around the tower in west London, and in burned debris that had fallen from the tower. High levels of hydrogen cyanide were also present in the soil she analysed. She suggested that health authorities should consider taking samples of blood and saliva from survivors, firefighters and local residents to monitor any damage to their DNA. PHE has decided not to take such action until Stec’s full report is published, likely to be early next year – 18 months after the fire that killed 72 people. There are a lot of certified labs everywhere who offer toxicological soil analysis for relative small money, so I dont understand for what reason other than sloppiness such tests haven't been conducted right after the fire. Of course, these tests might not be such extensive like the study of Anna Stec but they would give at least a status quo that might had lead to some precautions because of contaminated soil. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

While I sympathise with the 72 that lost their lives, anybody would think Grenfell was the worst thing ever to happen to the UK. After 18 months isn't it time people moved on? "The fire safety guidance for what materials could be used on Grenfell Tower was "confusing", the director of the company which installed the cladding has told an inquiry. "Ray Bailey, director of Harley Facades, said there was "quite widespread" confusion in the building industry at the time of the refurbishment. "The cladding has been blamed for fuelling the fire at the tower block. "The inquiry into the fire, which killed 72 people, is in its second phase."
