A viral outbreak at a New Jersey long-term medical care centre has killed six children and left a dozen more infected.

State officials confirmed a total of 18 cases of adenovirus among paediatric patients at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation on Tuesday.

Adenoviruses typically cause "mild illness" but the children affected are "medically fragile", officials say.

The state investigation is ongoing. The centre is now closed to new patients.

On Sunday, an inspection team found "minor handwashing deficiencies" at the centre,

Minor? They are either washing their hands or using sanitizing gels or they are not.

In a place like with so many vulnerable children that how does it get classed as minor?

Do not think  profit even comes into it, more likely undertrained and can not be bothered.

I have seen first hand the lack of hygiene in a particular hospital, many years back when my great grandmother also died because of lack of care and hygiene by the so called carers and nurses.

Its a blooming disgrace that this happens in modern day care centres in the western world.

The nurses and carers should not be 're'trained, they should be sacked and be done for manslaughter.

These incidents would never happen in the first place if they gave a damn.

And yes, it certainly does make my blood boil.

Well, generally you need to scrub for so many minutes before your hands are considered germ free. That's why doctors scrub for so long. Maybe they're only scrubbing they're hands for 30 seconds and that's why it's considered minor. Major might be if they didn't wash their hands at all.

If the outbreak of the virus and the deaths which followed is down to lack of hand cleaning, the result is  major.

BTW, the transmission route of adenovirus isnt limited to direct physical contact, so it can be transferred in a number of ways, like by medical instruments (non invasive ones as well) or just door handles, mobil phones, towels and others. As the virus can survive for some weeks at ambient temperatures and without a host, a high level of hygiene is needed to prevent from transmission into the human body.

Never should this be going on.

Manslaughter charges should be brought against all those who could not be bothered to adhere to health and safety rules and NO training, they were all told before stepping foot in there.

If someone does not know they have to keep the place clean then they do not have the mentality to be working there in the first place and sack the management for not managing.

None of them should EVER be allowed to work in health care again. This is a disgrace and so are they!

Regulations that interfere with profit are frowned on these days.  You would have better luck trying to convince people to use the free market approach and take their business else where via social media.
