For more than three billion years the only living earthlings were simple, single-celled sacs of gloop. Then suddenly, just a few hundred million years ago, the first multi-celled animals appeared out of the primordial slime. This single evolutionary leap gave rise to every complex creature on Earth, humans included.Nobody knows why it happened, or why at that moment, so late in Earth's history.
