Unusual Tournament Posted November 7, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 7, 2018 Russia Says It Will Soon Deploy Mach 20 Avangard Hypersonic Weapon On top of previous boasts of a nuclear-powered cruise missile and a nuclear-powered robot submarine with a 100-megaton warhead , Putin recently announced that Russia would soon deploy Avangard hypersonic weapons. Avangard is a boost-glide vehicle that is lofted high into the atmosphere atop an ICBM such as Russia's heavy Sarmat missile, and then glides down at hypersonic speed (faster than Mach 5). Avangard reportedly can glide down at Mach 20, and unlike the fixed trajectory of ballistic missile warheads, can maneuver to avoid anti-missile defenses. It may be armed with a single warhead of as much as 2 megatons. https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/russia-says-it-will-soon-deploy-mach-20-avangard-hypersonic-weapon-35377
Duke Wellington Posted November 7, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 7, 2018 (edited) As Russia has just developed these I guess we now know what the US hypersonic spacecraft have been about. Mach 20 is undefendable not that a 100 megaton sub isn't either. NATO spends billions expanding its AMD sites and Russia nullifies it on the cheap. Russia is refusing to fight America where it is strong and instead sending the message that any future disagreements will be fought on our terms not yours. also whats to stop Russia from changing over the nuclear warheads with conventional ones and thus have global reach without any foreign bases or external allies. stevewinn Posted November 7, 2018 #4 Share Posted November 7, 2018 We always have these big headlines Russia or China have these hypersonic weapons, the faster a missile moves the more it loses its ability to quickly change direction. Both Russia and China shout about their hypersonic munitions. Trying to be relevant, on the other hand The USA keep quiet with their black projects. The USA as a superpower is unequalled. And as such will have weapon systems beyond anything Russia or China can field. If the balloon ever went up the US would dazzle the world with its military tech. keithisco Posted November 8, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 8, 2018 Unlikely...at Mach 20 the "missile" would need an aweful lot of refractory materials to prevent it simply burning up on the way down. As for manoeuvring at that speed, I would like to know how it would detect a threat (radar would not work through the heat protection required) and any control surfaces would probably be ripped off. If simply using nozzle correction then any change of direction would take severak miles to implement (like an oil tanker cannot make sudden changes in bearing)
aztek Posted November 8, 2018 #6 Share Posted November 8, 2018 ussr had torpedo that could carry nukes and was as fast as 400knots under water, sounds serious, right? but it was as accurate as 10th century musket, there has not been a single incident where such "advanced" torpedo actually was used anywhere successfully. A: At speeds of Mach 3 (3 times the speed of sound) the SR- 71 Blackbird's airframe temperature can range from 315-480 degrees Celcius (600-900 degrees Farenheit), depending on its altitude http://howthingsfly.si.edu/ask-an-explainer/when-sr-71-blackbird-mach-3-how-hot-airframe and that is only 3M now a Concorde at 2M, quite a difference between 2 and 3M now imagine difference between 3 and 20M Quote The following diagram illustrates just how hot different parts of the Concorde became at its cruise speed of Mach 2. The skin temperature ranged from a peak of 127°C (260°F) at the nose to 90°C (194°F) at the tail actually do not imagine, space shuttle during reentry heat up to 1600c, and travels at about 25M we all know what it takes for shuttle not to get burned up. Quote The Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) is the barrier that protected the Space Shuttle Orbiter during the searing 1,650 °C (3,000 °F) heat of atmospheric reentry. A secondary goal was to protect from the heat and cold of space while in orbit. Edited November 8, 2018 by aztek

RoofGardener Posted November 8, 2018 #12 Share Posted November 8, 2018 (edited) Yeah... right...... According to Russian Sources, the Red Navy has a torpedo that can travel at 10,000,000,000 miles per hour with an accuracy of 0.0000001mm. It can carry a billion-megaton warhead, and is programmed to lock onto disney characters at a range of 10000000000000 miles. It's all complete rubbish, folks. It's Russian propaganda. They do NOT have a credible "hypersonic" missile. Edited November 8, 2018 by RoofGardener 1
