How will a Space War be fought?

When someone as powerful as US President Donald Trump announces the formation of an American space force, it's not hard to see why the military-minded have described war in space as an inevitability.

But is a real-life Star Wars really something we can expect soon?

Steven Freeland, who specialises in space law at Western Sydney University, doesn't think so.

"We've had humans utilising space for military purposes and for a whole range of other amazing things for 60 years — and we haven't had warfare in space," Mr Freeland said.

"We've got treaty law that makes it clear space is to be utilised for peaceful purposes."

According to Professor Freeland, the consequences of space warfare for countries that are reliant on satellite technology would be significant.

Even one day without access to space would be a disaster for the United States, Australia, Russia or China, he said, because they're so dependent on it.

If I were a warlike or unpredictable leader of a powerful nation with forces on land, sea, air , and space and I was engaged in a struggle with another earth based power, I would go for the high value targets to end the conflict quickly.  I would defend myself as best I could from ground and space base attacks knowing that my time is limited.  Eventually a space based platform will be hit.  I would take out the biggest enemy cities and militarily capable sites quickly and hope for surrender.  

In short, I don't think "what happens in space stays in space" to borrow a phrase.  It could be limited or horrific, but ground based populations will be the ones to suffer.

Communications between space and ground would be #1 targets then resource supply to space bases would be disabled. The space fight itself would be very short lived depending on supplies in hand. I think the space war would prove to be a waste of time and would very quickly revert to a devastating on earth ground war which would most likely turn nuclear.
