Samhain Posted November 16, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 16, 2018 (edited) We got some snow, and when going out to shovel, I spotted some strange footprints. I thought it could be a deer maybe, but when looking at it, it didn’t appear to have four legs. However, it wasn’t walking like something with two legs would (what does have two legs that lives around NJ?) because the footprints were at least a foot apart. They also appeared to look like hoof prints, however as the sun melted the snow they became bigger. They seemed to go from the street to the bushes way back into my backyard. Can anybody help identify them? (Here is an article where somebody found similar footprints: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1161765/Ancient-mystery-returns-Satans-hoofprints-spotted-Devon-garden.html) Edited November 16, 2018 by Samhain

Which section of Jersey? To me it looks like 2 legs, and they’re in a line. Northwestern Jersey.

rashore Posted November 16, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 16, 2018 Could be squirrel. I get the weird footprints in my yard, and have watched the squirrels hopping in the snow making the prints. They tend to trail from tree to tree in my yard.
acute Posted November 16, 2018 #6 Share Posted November 16, 2018 It could be a wounded bird, flying very slowly, bleeding at regular intervals.

That's one dedicated squirrel to keep hopping that far. I am however , not that dedicated.

But the footprints are about 2-3 inches in length. I don’t think a bird’s feet would be that large.

Plus, why would you immediately think 'Devil!' when footprints appear in the snow? There must be many, many more possibilities, surely?

If you look at something like a fox of feline trail trotting through the snow it sometimes looks like 2 when it's a extended 4.

Stupid question . what gives the 4 legged animal the illusion of 2 legged? Has it got to do with the snow? Or the way it has to lift its paws in the snow? (This is blowing my mind! We did a little tracking in my aunts farm, but its drier as dry out there, so spoor in the veldt I can read a little, but snow? Completely new territory)

If ur scared out of ur wits- logic doesn't seem to be an option . I always imagined the devil would be hot, so where he treads scorched death effect... Highly disappointed there wasn't snow melting around his footprints... It could be the New Jersey Devil or Hopping Devil, both not actual devils.

I’m not suggesting that it isn’t a deer or something - because it can be anything - I’m just curious as to what it could be.
