Elon Musk renames his BFR spacecraft Starship

Elon Musk has changed the name of his forthcoming passenger spaceship from Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) to Starship.

The entrepreneur would not reveal why he had renamed the craft, which has not yet been built, but added its rocket booster will be called Super Heavy.

In September, Mr Musk's SpaceX company announced that Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa had signed up to be the first passenger to travel on the ship.

The mission is planned for 2023 if the spaceship is built by that time.

It is the craft's fourth name - it started out as Mars Colonial Transporter (MCT) and then became Interplanetary Transport System (ITS) before becoming BFR.

Heh heh, steadily reducing his ambitions from colonizing Mars to short sub-orbital hops for ridiculously wealthy Japanese tourists.

Wrong for multiple reasons.

The ridiculously wealthy Japanese tourist is not going to make a sub-orbital hop, he is (as it clearly says in the article) going to fly around the moon.

The profits from the flight will help finance the colonisation of Mars.

Musk is a self-made billionaire, so it should be obvious, even to someone with an irrational hatred of the man, that he knows how to run a business

I have no irrational hatred of the man.  But he is obviously having some problems internally.  Just because he is a billionaire doesn't mean that he is not 'unhinged'.  My prediction is that he will never fly anywhere near the moon much less around it.  My prediction is also that in ten years there will be virtually no more Tesla's sold.  Even though I would love to own one...I couldn't possibly afford one...and if it were not for the subsidizing Federal Government...only a handful of people would be able to afford one.  I'm just not really impressed with his business models.  I don't think he will ever come close to a Mars expedition either.

Money from a tourist is not enough to finance a flight to Mars. Sending one person to Mars (they plan to send 5 people) costs 10 billion dollars so that the Mask will not have enough money to fly to a financially unprofitable Mars, besides, he has already been removed from his post as head of the company so that he can hardly manage its finances considering how hard he is went into profit. And the government will not allocate such money to NASA сonsidering that greedy Trump does not even want refugees to enter the country in order not to spend money on expenses, so theoretically they can make plans but in reality, preparation for the construction of modules on Mars is not being conducted so it can be lucky with the next president. And making a rocket bigger is one thing and a flight to Mars is already more difficult and costly.

A smart man would auction off the naming rights to rich egomaniacs so it would be called The Starship Joe Blow (Who was dumb enough to give me a billion dollars to name it after him)

Maybe he should change the name again to Jefferson Starship?

IF they build it and make it fly, at least it's a step forward. We need people to do forward steps so we can go further. Sweet talk maybe, but they are building something and take risk doing so. Hats off !
