UM-Bot Posted November 28, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 28, 2018 This strange looking 'sea monster' was found washed up on a beach near Christchurch after a storm. https://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/news/323668/bizarre-sea-creature-washes-up-in-new-zealand 3
Carnoferox Posted November 28, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 28, 2018 Not bizarre or strange in the slightest, just a ray. Move along. 3
freetoroam Posted November 28, 2018 #3 Share Posted November 28, 2018 Quote After a local taxidermist failed to identify it, Sure looks like a decomposing ray. If she did not want it preserved of stuffed then the taxidermist was likely not interested in what it was....or did know what it was, but his knowledge does not come free. New Zealand have a ministry for the environment which deal with marine life, thats where she should have gone, and then they would have told her, its a dead ray.

The rostral cartilage of the carcass does somewhat resemble a goblin shark snout, but the teeth and fins are a dead giveaway that it is a ray.
Seti42 Posted November 28, 2018 #6 Share Posted November 28, 2018 Cool find! I want one. And, yeah...It's a skate. Anyone who's ever cared to look such things up (either at libraries or online) can make that educated guess with some certainty. Sure, I am no marine biologist and cannot nail down the exact species; but it's totally a skate/ray.

Yeah, the bottom row of teeth seals it. 1
Robotic Jew Posted December 6, 2018 #12 Share Posted December 6, 2018 "bizarre looking..." would have been more appropriate...but probably wouldn't have generated many clicks...
