spud the mackem Posted December 7, 2018 #28 Share Posted December 7, 2018 The good old days were when you could walk down a street at night without the fear of being mugged, beaten , killed or raped ,you could leave your door unlocked until bedtime. The materialist Posted March 30, 2019 #30 Share Posted March 30, 2019 are authority figures manipulating media to push their agendas? Good question, but it needs to be reversed in order for it to make sense. Is it possible to think of media existing in vacuum without a political , and more importantly, an economical background? Certainly not, what most people ignore about media is that media its an enterprise, it needs financing, as its most basic condition of existence. and often those who do the financing have their own purposes and political orientations. If I were to finance a media outlet, I would certainly make sure to get something in exchange, either a commercial advertisement, an idea conveyed or criticized, etc. Here we come back to the larger structural analysis of institutions as being embedded in larger contexts which contribute to their form and function. We can't just blame media for what it is, there must be some more important factors operating in the background, and these factors should be exposed and discussed. This thread isn't about reminiscing about better times but rather a look at how technology has both helped us become more informed and at the same time more ignorant of thruths. In most developed countries there is a trend of decreasing amounts of violent crime, decreasing instances of terrorism related attacks and a decrease in poverty. However if the media we consume is to be blieved we are less safe now then ever before. What creates the disconnect? Is it proliferation of social media platforms? are media platforms sensationalizing stories to stay relevant? are authority figures manipulating media to push their agendas? or do we simply see the past with through coloured glasses?
