Social Media and Search History Gun Bill

A pair of New York legislators is drafting a bill that would make social media history checks part of the process of purchasing a gun.

Under the legislation, gun purchasers would have up to three years of their social media history potentially scrutinized by authorities, New York outlet WCBS NewsRadio reports. The internet search history of prospective gun buyers would face searches going back up to one year.

“A three-year review of a social media profile would give an easy profile of a person who is not suitable to hold and possess a firearm,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, who has proposed the legislation with New York State Senator Kevin Parker.

Adams described the searches, which would involve scouring social media posts for hate speech, as basic police work.

Imagine that... who would've ever thunk it?  It will be interesting to see if the nannies in the NY State House are successful in trampling on the First AND Second Amendments.  Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me.  If they pass it and it passes muster in the USSC, look for a LOT of people from that good state to make their lives and livings (and pay their taxes) elsewhere.  Only the poorest of the poor and the most brain-dead of the sheep will stay.  And good luck taking weapons from the inner-city Proles  :w00t:  :gun:

The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that hate speech is legally protected free speech under the First Amendment.

however i can somewhat understand the idea, pretty much every mass shooter lately had plenty of stuff on their SM pages to question their sanity, or intent.   but i understand in reality things politicians do and things they say almost always opposite, so i see abuse and misuse of such law. i'm against it.

not to mention legal contradiction, hate speech is protected under 1st am. so they can't use it to punish, or in this case to restrict purchase. i'm sure right after it passes , if it does, someone will file a lawsuit

How can they even know for sure? With throwaway accounts and public computers how easy is it to find the real history of people online? What if they don't have one?

Who decides what is "bad" info? Is it bad to be pro gun? Is it bad to vent once how your spouse annoys you when they are late? How about if you are extremely Dem or Rep politically? Or a Muslim?

This idea has some issues I think.

They implemented something similar in the UK. Since then our country as disintegrated. It's like 75% immigrants now, the government have cctv in our bathrooms and Wales is falling into the sea.

Do what you can to stop this Americans or you will suffer a horrendous fate!

I think aztek nailed it in one... it's just another means to chip away at 2A.  A day will come when the Left will take control of the USSC and that will be the path to crush gun rights.  It will be a day that history (if anyone bothers to write it) will note as the beginning of the bloodiest conflict in U.S. history.  The globalists cannot subdue and use America as long as the people are armed.  Eventually, they have to come for the weapons.  Then, it's on to the revolution.

Shouldn't the goal of a civilized society be to move towards the day when weapons of murder are a thing of the past? As humans, shouldn't we welcome a day where there's no need for "protection" from other humans?

Also, good luck with your violent overthrow of the government that could already murder you at any point whether you have a gun or not. They don't care if you have guns. If what you're suggesting was their goal then they would just come and take the guns from you, or blow you up with a drone.

That's true and it's also the reason why the line MUST be drawn at infringement of any significant kind on 2A.  They need to understand that when they make THAT move, they're going to open up a season on themselves, as well.  I don't count my blood so precious that I'm willing to accept the boot of some political scumbag on my neck.  Hell...we ALL die.  They might want to remember that not all of us care as much as they seem to do.  :gun:

Just a side note.  And I am not sure how this is going to be taken . But I truly do not mean it personally.

But theoretically if a country like New Zealand or Australia where scanning social media for possible gun threats. Your post would have all of the red flags.

If Americans stop owning guns, the liberals will form their version of the Khmer Rouge to kill us. so... Ya, I'll suffer the fate we have now.

No offense taken.  I understand completely why my words would raise "red flags".  TBH, it's the reason I use the words that I choose.  I am not a violent person by nature and any person who has ever known me would attest to that.  OTOH, I genuinely believe what I have said about those who wish to disarm Americans and it needs to be made clear to them that it won't happen without much turmoil and loss.  Sometimes the best way to avoid a tragedy is to awaken those who are headed toward it in ignorance.  I'm speaking here only of Americans.  I have nothing to hide from any government official who might want to come to have a chat with me about my words or intentions.  We'll only have a problem when they decide to remove my Constitutional Rights because of my words or ideas.

What if a different set of words and ideas where prominent on social media.

Similar to the last high-school shooters Facebook page.  Many people thought he was a potential shooter but the legislation was not available to stop him.

What if this legislation has the potential to scout for plans made to commit gun crimes? Are those words and ideas a good reason to scan social media?

Did you ever notice in history that shortly after a socialist regime bans guns, they go on a wilding?

Russia, China, Germany, Cambodia, Cuba. And now, Venezuela (meduro) has banned gun ownership. I bet it will happen there, too.

What I'm saying, Guy, is, of course America is leaning left. Hard left.  and they have been pushing for a gun grab. Right now, the constitution is stopping them but one good socialist dictator will take care of that. At least we can go down swinging.

Which is exactly why I'm against this.

AndThen has been a safe responsible gun owner his whole life.

So true, but makes me think of the irony that it is necessary to make it difficult to purchase something that is currently legal to buy.

that's heading into the territory of thought crime, or the film and Philip K. Dick story Minority Report, isn't it. It's the classic dilemma, if someone says they'd like to do this or that, is that grounds for stopping them before they've done it? Or the way that much-loved leaders like General Secretary Stalin removed people that he thought might be a threat to him at some point.

If his peers, parents or teachers noticed it and brought it to the attention of law enforcement then yes, I think it would be justified for them to pursue an investigation.  That isn't what this particular bill is attempting to accomplish.  This is an effort by a government to codify a right to analyze an individual's thoughts and ideology and to make decisions that can take away Constitutional RIGHTS from that person based on whatever standard of behavior they decide to call "acceptable".  Can you understand the downside of giving such power to a government under such ambiguous rules?  The sad truth is that political ideology is at the heart of all such legislation and our government has proven, especially over the past couple of years, that it cannot be trusted to be an honest arbiter that will protect the rights of all.  Quite the opposite, in fact.
