Nnicolette Posted December 14, 2018 #2 Share Posted December 14, 2018 Is that graininess in the photograph or is there a lot of stuff there?
Ares_Zeusson Posted December 14, 2018 #3 Share Posted December 14, 2018 Is artefacts a real word? Image artifacts my butt. NASA knows what those dark spots really are.

It looks like there are a few types of graininess/noise in the image, the camera is susceptible to high energy particles and there are also compression artefacts showing. It's impressive nonetheless.

FJResto Posted December 14, 2018 #9 Share Posted December 14, 2018 Im curious... how could the probe withstand the temperatures? Do we have material that can withstand that? It must be in excess of a million degrees and hotter the closest it gets.

Yes NASA do know and have explained them Quote The bright spot near the center is the planet Mercury, while the dark spots are image artefacts from background correction. Note the photos are from a probe, what could you possibly have to better what NASA have done? 2

People can be so ignorant to how amazing these type of things are. It’s such an great achievement! It’s like they think NASA comes up with an idea over beers and then executes it the next weekend.
