Ten people were arrested as hundreds of demonstrators wearing yellow vests took to the streets of central Tel Aviv on Friday morning in protest at the rising cost of living. Inspired by recent protests across France and other major European cities, organizers urged the public to turn up in their masses to oppose increases in the price of electricity, water and foodstuffs, as well as to dismantle the power of monopolies. Joking apart, it seems they may have a point. They reckon that electricity could go up by almost 10%, with Water not far behind. This is on top of an increase in food prices. But all of the above, it should be noted, relates to state-run power/water/ monopolies. So it ALREADY a socialist utopia ! Oooops....... The government owns 99% of the Israel Electric Corporation, which provides and/or distributes the overwhelming majority of electricity in Israel. Moreover, tariffs are set by a separate government department: the Israel Public Utility Authority for Electricity. A very similar situation exists in the Water industry: it is state controlled/owned, and the tariffs regulated by a government department. That seems about as socialist as you can get, in terms of public ownership/control ? I'm not sure how you can regard that setup as being run "by the few.. for the few" ?

Folks tired of waiting (and paying) while the fattest are fed first or simply fed-up hooligans wanting mischief? The intentional and interconnected nature of "unrest" in western nations is becoming harder and harder to ignore. Paris is burning — and London too: World War IV and the crisis of democracy Quote We’ve seen plenty of media coverage over the past few weeks of the widening chaos in France and Britain. But there’s almost no sense that those events may be connected, still less that they have anything to do with the ongoing political turmoil in the United States. This is a critical failure: The longer political and media elites continue to act as if everything is normal, and claim that democracy is working more or less as intended -- and that what we are experiencing is not a systemic, global crisis -- the worse it will get.

RoofGardener Posted December 21, 2018 #8 Share Posted December 21, 2018 Hmm.. just a quick thought. The 'yellow vest' protests in Paris where characterised by violence and destruction. The protest in Tel Aviv involved 600 people blocking a road, and waving placards. Somewhat more civilised !!

I don't have any knowledge about the Israeli economy and private versus state-run companies. But here in sweden we had a right-wing government that sold out a lot of the profitable state-owned companies to private interests (just for some quick bucks and a stupid idea that it's a good thing that those that have enough money to buy them gets more money) and of course not the ones with no or limited profit. They demanded that many of the not sold state-owned companies would start to show profit. They have to compensate for the loss in revenue to the state, caused by selling the profitable companies. So has nothing to do with socialism, at least not here. Not sure if it is the same in Israel, but it's not always as it appears to be, it is the worst kind of capitalism here in sweden that is behind the raised prices from government owned companies! Zam Hmmm... the Israeli model appears to be that the government set up private companies to run the utilities, but the government had something like 95%+ ownership of said companies. In addition, prices are set by a government department.

That's why I'm a libertarian. the more power the government has, the more they can corrupt.

Each group has it's own reasons for donning the yellow vests and protesting but all reasons seem to be valid. Here, they are protesting Trudeau's Government for handicapping our oil market and embarrassing all of Canada with his hyper progressive nonsense. What really kicked it off was when Trudeau visited Alberta to "express his grief" over our crippled economy. His solution was offering a $1.5 billion handout paid for by tax dollars. Needless to say, his offer was not well received. Calgary Police mentioned a "large gathering" in front of city hall yesterday - people all over are starting to get fed up. Sometimes it takes messing with one's livelihood to light that fire of motivation. These next few years could get ugly depending on how things play out. 2

Ahhh, ,every politicians favorite passtime and general fix-all, "spend other people's money". I wouldn't mind so much if the people actually had a say in just *how much* of other people's money they could steal - er, I mean tax but you don't think power pig politicians would ever let the people decide that in a democratic society, do you?? LOL! Yeah, right.
