Tsunami In Indonesia

So, collapse of the western flank of the volcano was the cause of the tsunami. This exact scenario was posited in a 2012 research article (I think it's open access now, but here is a ResearchGate link if not).

https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Thomas_Giachetti/publication/235225380_Tsunami_hazard_related_to_a_flank_collapse_of_Anak_Krakatau_Volcano_Sunda_Strait_Indonesia/links/09e41510939dff0c0c000000/Tsunami-hazard-related-to-a-flank-collapse-of-Anak-Krakatau-Volcano-Sunda-Strait-Indonesia.pdf

This highlights the need for better transferral of research into actionable risk mitigation strategies. In other words, we knew this could happen (and was going to happen eventually), yet nothing was done.

I saw where the death toll has risen to 373 with over 1500 injured and they fear the number may rise more.

You have to remember, Anak Krakatoa is only 30 miles off the Java coast. The waves hit 20 minutes after the collapse occurred. They move very quickly and didn't have very far to go. Not much time to get out of the way. That's why people are being warned to stay out of the coastal towns while the volcano is still erupting.

True. This is a very tragic scenario.

I guess that's the point, isn't it? With an active volcano that close offshore, a much more robust active monitoring program is needed.

The collapse was seen on satellite footage. It's too dangerous right now for scientists to approach the island. The warning system is based on earthquake activity. They are looking into modifying it, but it still won't be a very long warning time to people right along the coast.

It's about 47 miles to Bander Lampung, Sumatra from Anak Krakatoa. They were hit also. There just isn't much warning time for these poor people to get out of the way. The volcano has been erupting since June with larger eruptions occurring in July, October and November. Up until now, it hasn't affected the Sundra Strait.

Indonesian authorities warned on Wednesday (Dec 26) of "extreme weather and high waves" around the erupting Anak Krakatoa volcano, urging people to stay away from the coast already devastated by a tsunami that killed more than 400 people.

Clouds of ash spewed from Anak Krakatoa, almost obscuring the volcanic island where a crater collapse at high tide on Saturday sent waves up to 5m high smashing into the coast on the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra islands.

Indonesia's meteorology agency (BMKG) said late on Tuesday the rough weather around the volcano could make its crater more fragile.

Heavy rains hamper rescuers' efforts to reach remote villages.

I hope everyone heeds these warning and stays away from the coastal areas. I haven't seen many reports that mention the southern parts of Sumatra. I'm just thinking they are also included in what is being released. The wave didn't reach as far as Bandar Lampung.

I had seen another article I can't find again but I found this one. As you can see from the first picture, the island can't be seen due to the ash plume and the steam clouds from it's continuing activity. You can't see anything that's taking place right now. It's a good thing people are leaving the coastal areas. Some are choosing to go to villages more inland permanently. The rain should stop Wednesday. It's thought more bodies may wash up due to the bad weather.

At least they now have warning.  I hope they take precautions in case the thing really blows its top this time.  Maybe it would be a good thing if it did at this point.  Let the pressure off so the next time will be less destructive.  What a place to live...

As of yesterday, the alert level has been raised and flights are re-routed as the volcano continues to erupt. The islands in the Sundra Strait between Sumatra and Java have been evacuated and sensors have been placed near the volcano to monitor it's activity.

Japanese radar shows signs of the collapse on the volcano's southwest side.

This is a very good article explaining what is taking place. The activity has actually increased since December 22nd.

The scale of the dramatic collapse of the Indonesian volcano that led to last Saturday's devastating tsunami in the Sunda Strait is becoming clear.

Researchers have examined satellite images of Anak Krakatau to calculate the amount of rock and ash that sheared off into the sea.

They say the volcano has lost more than two-thirds of its height and volume during the past week.

Much of this missing mass could have slid into the sea in one movement.

It would certainly explain the displacement of water and the generation of waves up to 5m high that then inundated the nearby coastlines of Java and Sumatra.

The volcano remains very active. Scientists will be better able to access the situation when they are again able to go to the island and see what all has taken place.

Good job finding this man safe! The eruptions have stopped and clearer pictures of the volcano can be taken. Hopefully after the collapse, it's ability to cause harm has stopped for a long time.

The no-go zone remains in effect for now in case it starts up again.

Indonesia Landslide Triggered by Torrential Rain Crashes Into Village, Killing 15

A landslide triggered by torrential rain crashed into a village on Indonesia's main island of Java Monday, killing at least 15.

The landslide buried 30 houses in Sirnaresmi village in West Java's Sukabumi district. Sixty people who lost their homes were forced to move to a temporary shelter, said National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Television video showed relatives wailing as they watched rescuers pull a mud-caked body from a devastated hamlet. It was placed in a blue bag and taken away for burial.

Two cracks have been found on Anak Krakatoa and a tsunami alert has been issued in caution in case there is another collapse.

Krakatoa continues to erupt almost constantly, keeping officials in fear of another landslide occurring. January 7th was particularly active.

The volcano remains dangerous.

The UN is warning that the Pacific Ring of Fire is very active right now.

Krakatoa has been completely reshaped with the crater now enclosed and containing a lake. For now, it seems to have calmed down.

It seems people are going to the island. These pictures were posted on January 10, 2019.

Thought I'd take a look at this again and see what's going on. There was distant earthquake activity on February 8th and Krakatoa is still active. People are warned to stay at least 5 km from the crater.

https://en.antaranews.com/news/122220/mount-anak-krakatau-experiences-one-time-distant-tectonic-earthquake

People have gone back along the shoreline even though lava and gases continues to spew. Authorities say the volcano is still dangerous. There has been action taken against the government over warnings resident feel should have been issued.

What a place to live :( Here on the gulf coast we have horrific hurricanes every few decades but we have plenty of warning time.  I don't think I'd want to live where the ground moves drastically under my feet.
