I saw where the death toll has risen to 373 with over 1500 injured and they fear the number may rise more. You have to remember, Anak Krakatoa is only 30 miles off the Java coast. The waves hit 20 minutes after the collapse occurred. They move very quickly and didn't have very far to go. Not much time to get out of the way. With an active volcano that close offshore, a much more robust active monitoring program is needed. The collapse was seen on satellite footage. It's too dangerous right now for scientists to approach the island. The warning system is based on earthquake activity. There just isn't much warning time for these poor people to get out of the way. The volcano has been erupting since June with larger eruptions occurring in July, October and November. I haven't seen many reports that mention the southern parts of Sumatra. I'm just thinking they are also included in what is being released. As you can see from the first picture, the island can't be seen due to the ash plume and the steam clouds from it's continuing activity. You can't see anything that's taking place right now. It's a good thing people are leaving the coastal areas. Some are choosing to go to villages more inland permanently. The rain should stop Wednesday. Researchers have examined satellite images of Anak Krakatau to calculate the amount of rock and ash that sheared off into the sea. They say the volcano has lost more than two-thirds of its height and volume during the past week. Much of this missing mass could have slid into the sea in one movement. It would certainly explain the displacement of water and the generation of waves up to 5m high that then inundated the nearby coastlines of Java and Sumatra.
