Saru Posted January 7, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 7, 2019 We're kicking off the new year by bringing back one of our most popular forum events from the past - the official Unexplained Mysteries chess tournament - this will be the fifth season overall and the first to be held since 2009. For the tournament, we are once again using the popular online correspondence chess site RedHotPawn.com which is free to join and makes it possible to play matches without having to be online at the same time as your opponent. You can play either from your browser or via your mobile phone and it is possible to have several matches going at the same time. For the tournament, Joc will be organising matchmaking and keeping score throughout - a big thank you to him for his help. Structure and scoring If we get enough signups, the tournament will typically be divided in to three rounds. For round one, participants are organized in to groups of 5. Each player in each group plays against every other player in their group twice (once as white, once as black). The scoring is 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss. For round two, the top 3 scoring players from each group, are put in to a pool and randomized again in to groups of 3. The top scoring players from round 1 are each placed in a different group for round 2. Each player will again play each other player within their own group twice with the same scoring system. For round three, the top scoring players from each group in round two will be put through in to a final group. They will then play each other again twice - with the winner being the player with the highest score at the end. Note that if there are too few signups, we may simply have a single group rather than a round-based elimination system, so we'll have to see how things go. Who can take part ? Absolutely anyone who is a registered forum member. If you'd like to participate you can register your interest - here. Please note however that you must be available to play over the next few months. Although the games won't necessarily take up a large amount of time in of themselves, there must be a reasonable expectation that you will be available throughout the tournament, so if you disappear for weeks and are holding things up then your spot may be given to someone else. Other than that - thank you in advance to everyone taking part, good luck and have fun. 5

For individual matches, we use a timeout of 1 day with a 7 day time bank. This means that if you don't move for 24 hours, the time bank will begin to tick down. When a move is made, the clock stops and the 1 day buffer is reset. If the 7 day time bank is expired, the match is forfeit. For the tournament overall however, there's no specific schedule for playing your matches. Most likely each round will take several weeks to complete because we'll need to wait for everyone to play their matches.

It's actually fairly simple to set up a 'homegame' using the Pokerstars software. Have it a tournament where everyone buys in for like 5 bucks or something, with the usual tournament payout structure.

It wouldn't be for real money, that would open up issues relating to gambling laws, age checks etc. As I say though there are no plans for anything like that at the moment.
