Eldorado Posted January 11, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 11, 2019 A woman in China is making headlines for a rare type of temporary hearing condition that makes her unable to hear men. According to the Daily Mail, the patient, only identified as Ms. Chen, woke up one morning and couldn't hear her boyfriend speak. Chen went straight to Qianpu Hospital where she was seen by an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, who treated Chen, told reporters, "She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn't hear him at all." The night before, Chen felt nausea and suffered from a ringing in her ears. She was also under a lot of stress, working late and not getting enough sleep. Chen thought little of it and went to sleep as usual before waking up with the condition. Doctors were initially puzzled by her symptoms, but she was eventually diagnosed with "reverse-slope hearing loss, in which she could only hear high frequencies." It really, truly sucks. I hav'nt heard birds, frogs, or insects for 25 years. If anyone tells you your hearing protection is adequate for the job, DON'T listen, double up on the protection. Wear muffs and plugs. I wish someone had told me this. I have a pair of 8,000.00 dollar hearing aids that arn't worth ****. I very much appreciate your sentiment, but I wouldn't let you. Being an island of one is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. On the bright side, I learned to lip read as my work damaged hands aren't flexible enough for sign language, so I can read lips from a distance. It is common and fairly widespread. Why I started working in sawmills in my 20's, hearing protection was not considered a health and safety issue. We newer guys would wad up toilet paper and stuff it in our ears, but the older guys couldn't be bothered. They didn't notice the noise anymore. It was another 10 years or more before hearing protection became mandatory. I've changed industries, but always been around manufacturing for the last 40 years. Over the last 5 years, we have had hearing tests yearly. My first test showed hearing loss in both ears in the high frequency zone. Too late, damage done before I got better protection than wads of TP. Over the last four tests, it has declined only slightly even though I am now in my 60's. Hearing Protection works. Hankenhunter is so right, it is no joke not being able to hear. That is a lot different than the selective hearing we joke about. Don't kid yourself Sci-nerd, men have this ability too. Turning off our hearing and sight for a few hours of perfect sleep? Turning off your taste buds when you have to eat something horrific. Removing your sense of smell when your dog removes some noxious gas from his body. Instead we are made to experience it all.
