The woman who can't hear men talk

A woman in China is making headlines for a rare type of temporary hearing condition that makes her unable to hear men. According to the Daily Mail, the patient, only identified as Ms. Chen, woke up one morning and couldn't hear her boyfriend speak.

Chen went straight to Qianpu Hospital where she was seen by an ear, nose, and throat specialist. Dr. Lin Xiaoqing, who treated Chen, told reporters, "She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn't hear him at all."

The night before, Chen felt nausea and suffered from a ringing in her ears. She was also under a lot of stress, working late and not getting enough sleep. Chen thought little of it and went to sleep as usual before waking up with the condition.

Doctors were initially puzzled by her symptoms, but she was eventually diagnosed with "reverse-slope hearing loss, in which she could only hear high frequencies."

There'll be a few women wishing they had that for a few days, I'll bet.

I'm hearing impaired and my lost ranges include womens and childrens voices. It really, truly sucks. I hav'nt heard birds, frogs, or insects for 25 years. If anyone tells you your hearing protection is adequate for the job, DON'T listen, double up on the protection. Wear muffs and plugs.

I wish someone had told me this. I have a pair of 8,000.00 dollar hearing aids that arn't worth ****. I really hope this helps someone to avoid what I went and am still going through.

If I only could, I'd make a deal with God, and I'd get him to swop our places

I wish I could hear this song. I very much appreciate your sentiment, but I wouldn't let you. Being an island of one is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. On the bright side, I learned to lip read as my work damaged hands aren't flexible enough for sign language, so I can read lips from a distance. Thinking about joining the foreign intelligence as a spy. Lol

I would still swop. If it was possible ;)

My dear Grandmother used to have this problem. She would sit in her chair ignoring everyone and if someone would say something to her she would say sorry cant hear you love what did you say and you would have to yell at her so she could hear you but if someone was talking about her her ears would prick up and she would turn around and say don't talk about me talk to me so we always used to joke about how she had selective hearing :D

Let me guess. Feels kinda numb with a crap load of ringing? Go see an audiologist. If it's a newer injury they may be able to help you. If it's an old injury, welcome to the club and I feel for you. Better protect that right ear. Not being able to hear your grandchildren is a fate worse than many others.

In my experience this must be a common condition.  I've known a few that had trouble hearing me.

Wow sorry to hear. I was in the marine corps and did some work in the airport so I understand the importance of protecting your hearing.

It is common and fairly widespread.  Why I started working in sawmills in my 20's, hearing protection was not considered a health and safety issue.  We newer guys would wad up toilet paper and stuff it in our ears, but the older guys couldn't be bothered. They didn't notice the noise anymore.  It was another 10 years or more before hearing protection became mandatory.   I've changed industries, but always been around manufacturing for the last 40 years.  Over the last 5 years, we have had  hearing tests yearly. My first test showed hearing loss in both ears in the high frequency zone.  Too late, damage done before I got better protection than wads of TP.  Over the last four tests, it has declined only slightly even though I am now in my 60's. Hearing Protection works.

Hankenhunter is so right, it is no joke not being able to hear.  That is a lot different than the selective hearing we joke about.  Don't kid yourself Sci-nerd, men have this ability too.  It gets stronger with exercise.

Hank, I hope technology is fast enough and becomes inexpensive enough for some improvements that you can enjoy..

Has this been linked from The Onion?

Reverse-slope hearing loss (RSHL) gets its name from the shape it produces in visualizations of hearing tests — a slope that is a mirror image of the incline produced by high-frequency hearing loss, according to audiology clinic Audiology HEARS, P.C., in Cumming, Georgia.

It affects an estimated 3,000 people in the U.S. and Canada — for every 12,000 people with hearing loss, only one individual has RSHL, the audiology clinic reported.

My dad cant hear high frequency. Its so weird to me because the loudest most obnoxious noises to me are completely silent to him. I think weve all seen with the yanny recording we dont all hear the same range.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could selectively toggle our senses on and off safely(No damage when not in use). Turning off our hearing and sight for a few hours of perfect sleep? Turning off your taste buds when you have to eat something horrific. Removing your sense of smell when your dog removes some noxious gas from his body. Instead we are made to experience it all. What an absolute flaw.
