Fish found thriving in virtually no oxygen

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Oxygen—it's a basic necessity for animal life. But marine biologists recently discovered large schools of fishes living in the dark depths of the Gulf of California where there is virtually no oxygen. Using an underwater robot, the scientists observed these fishes thriving in low-oxygen conditions that would be deadly to most other fish. This discovery could help scientists understand how other marine animals might cope with ongoing changes in the chemistry of the ocean.

Makes sense. The sea offers a virtual weightless environment, making the need for fast metabolism less critical. The deep sea even more so.

Low activity levels would be the key. Highly active surface fishes like Tuna, the opposite.

Wow, water without oxygen.

What's so surprising about water with little dissolved oxygen? It's not as though they're suggesting it's water molecules which lack oxygen atoms.

That's not what you meant, was it?

Dissolved oxygen, obviously. I guess the depths having no photosynthesis, means oxygen has to come from further up the water column, and the interchange of surface waters with deep waters, is quite small.
