Intimidating Books

Is there a book that you as a reader always believe you will read or want to read, but once you pick the book up , for whatever reason you cant finish it or only read a couple chapters and then put it away? A book you know is full of great reviews but something about it, either the length, the tiny font, the mass amount of characters, the timeline, etc, just throws you off and you decide to "come back to it". And even when you come back to it, you end up full circle and still are at the same issue where you've been with that book so many times before?

My book: Spandau Phoenix- Greg Isles.

Something about this book, intimidates the hell out of me. Not sure how a book can intimidate me, but I think its the myriad of characters, or maybe its just the overload of information (which is weird because as a history major, you write a lot of papers and do a lot of research). I can't say its the size of the book, because I've read the Natchez Burning series and those were not short by any means. I keep coming back to this book over and over and cant get past chapter two. Not sure what it is, but hoping one day ill cave and read it.

What book intimidates you or gives you the "run around?"

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (provide accents and things where appropriate.) What I have read of it is often quite funny, but it keeps wandering off into sort of magical surreality and stuff, and seems to take ages to make any progress.

Stranger in a Strange Land  by Robert Heinlein. It was very popular and much acclaimed in its day. I found it unreadable, despite my fondness for science fiction. I had the same reaction to the similarly famous classic Dune, by Frank Herbert.

Hmmmm .. a copy here somewhere ... I can't recall the full title .... I think Tolstoy's and or Hermitage or city in the north St. my two halves of my brain are off today... oh Petersburg and it was """""""" War and Peace ".

How is it ... ? that someone recommends a book and its torrid horrid, can't stand Brit twit books and that War and Peace was trying but one I did like was by Henri Troyat, and naturally I forgot that title.... good grief ... LATERZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

UPDATE it was simply: Tolstoy .... a bit of a recount of when they were kids, exceptional details.

NOw when people go on and on like this it destroys it for me " I recommend also reading his 'Firebrand:The Life of Dostoyevsky'. Then reread Crime and Punishment, Notes From the Underground, Anna Karenina, The Brothers Karamazov, Devils. You gain insight into how they both prophesied the socialist/communist state by more than forty years. Then read Solzhenitsyn. Then Anna Politkovskaya's 'A Russian Diary' " as one or two of those epic like books seemed just right for me.

Artemis by Andy Weir, expected to like it after seeing the film Martian, based on his book, but only managed the first 30 pages. That was about 12 months ago and not looked at it since.

In my opinion read these Douglas Adams - The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse nr 5, George Orwell - 1984 , George Orwell - Animal farm,  Joseph Heller - Catch 22, Albert Camus - the stranger all good books some is not that intimidating but you cant stop reading them.

I read the Gruffalo to my kid every night. She falls asleep around three quarters of the way through like clock work. I've never gone past the third last page, I suppose I'm a little intimidated to carry on without her.

But I've tried a number of times to read On the Revolution of Heavenly Spheres and Harmony of the World. (Copernicus and Kepler) For the life of me I can't finish neither.

I find it very difficult to read anything I already know what's going to happen. Especially if there is a movie I've seen.

Oh yes, I got fed up with Dune. Too much tedious politics and nowhere near enough spaceships or Sand Worms

I thought that was quite readable. Plausible characters and realistic dialogue.

I have to read the book first or forget bothering later if there is a movie out. They always ruin each other somehow.

Movies never live up to the book, and movies ruin how you imagine the book. Although I think The Hobbit trilogy is an exception.

Same goes for video games.

I'm plowing through The Witcher stories, but all I can think of is Geralt looking like how he does in the Video games.

For me, it's The Davinci Code. Let me say that I LOVE to read and will read anything. But I just can't with this book. And I've never seen the movie because I want to read the book first... LOL I don't get it....

The Atlantis Hypothesis. This book is a compilation of the various hypotheses on Plato's Atlantis presented at the 2nd International Conference, held in Athens, Greece in 2011.

That’s funny, I came across that book on shelves and there was a big gasp about it in reviews. Something  told me not to buy it, and I didn’t .. guess it was the right call. Lol
