Popular Post Kenemet Posted February 2, 2019 Popular Post #1 Share Posted February 2, 2019 A city dating to the 15th century and earlier has been found under the sands by scientists using LIDAR technology n an area they thought only held the remains of a village. It's thought to have been home to around 10,000 people. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/lost-city-uncovered-africa-using-airborne-laser-scans-095639240.html?guccounter=1 The article has some reconstructions that I'm not terribly pleased with. I know that cities like this tend to grow organically, but the kraal type structures they're reproducing seem... I dunno... too far spaced and not fractal enough. 5 4
Popular Post +susieice Posted February 2, 2019 Popular Post #2 Share Posted February 2, 2019 (edited) One of my favorite authors went to Guatemala on an expedition for NatGeo where they had used LIDAR to search the rainforest. They found 5 covered cities and went in to explore one of the smaller ones. What they found was fascinating as everything was exactly the way the inhabitants had left it over 500 years ago. The area was thick jungle and no one had been anywhere near there for centuries. They found a temple with the sacrifices still intact as the people had left them when they abandoned the city. Another expedition went down a little after this first one left and they are uncovering and learning a lot. The inhabitants were contemporary to the Mayans and traded with them but were not Mayan themselves. The book is called The Lost City of the Monkey God and it was written by Douglas Preston. Kmt will know who he is. LIDAR is awesome and can help open up the location of a lot of ruins that are in extremely remote areas. The expedition I talked about above was the first one to use LIDAR for archaeological purposes. Edited February 2, 2019 by susieice 10
+susieice Posted February 2, 2019 #3 Share Posted February 2, 2019 My bad. It's been awhile and many books since I read this although I have the book. It was Honduras, not Guatemala.

The archaeologists had no name for this particular civilization and they aren't even sure if this particular site is what was known as the white city. LIDAR found 5 covered sites, 2 others larger than this one and 2 small like this. They had to be taken in by helicopter. Here's an interview with Preston but it's an hour long. There are other videos and reviews available. 3

Likely Guy Posted February 2, 2019 #9 Share Posted February 2, 2019 This thread is a perfect example of why the forum "Ancient Mysteries (which this is) & Alternative History (which deserves a part in the conspiracy section)" should be separated. If not, then the terms "Ancient Mystery" and "Alternative History" seem synonymous to you.

jaylemurph Posted February 2, 2019 #11 Share Posted February 2, 2019 Doctor Who managed to find three of them on his own. Surely a fringe Atlantidiot can find two. —Jaylemurph

So I'm looking for other topics to put here! 2

acute Posted February 2, 2019 #15 Share Posted February 2, 2019 LIDAR truly is a game-changer for archeology. The way it can 'remove' a forest is mind-blowing. 4
cathya Posted February 4, 2019 #16 Share Posted February 4, 2019 Oh, looks like a city with "walls" around it. Isn't that considered immoral?
