Definitely the way to go. Going directly to Mars is to dangerous and more importantly too expensive. The moon would make a perfect launching place to further explore the solar system and would give us the experience and technology to handle the hazardous environments we would encounter.

Unfortunately whatever this administration tries to do, it will likely be underfunded and undone by the next.

It would make sense to build a base there and keep traveling back and forth developing new technology as we go, compared to a one way suicide trip to mars.

I can't understand why we are not inhabiting the moon today. All the talk and focus is on going to Mars. Which in comparison to going to the moon is an expensive and monumental task.

Lets face it, the Moon is a lot easier and quicker to get to.
In my opinion, All the tech, materials and manpower used to establish the ISS could have been better used for a Moon Base. And probably with same amount of time and money and effort.
I think that there could have been hundreds of People living on he moon today and possibly some kind of industry. That is, If the space program hadn't fallen backwards.
Now we have to rely on private companies to go where no man has gone before and exploit space for profit.
Nothing that NASA is doing makes a lot of sense these days. They have become militarized and black budget enhanced and are not interested in exploration as much as weaponizeation of space. SPACE FORCE!
They act like it's Rocket Science!
One other important factor that makes inhabiting the moon attractive is,..It would make for a great jumping off point for further planetary and solar system exploration.
There could be factories building space ships on the moon using special alloys developed in low to zero gravity environments and passing asteroids would be more accessible as well and possibly harvested for precious minerals. Not to mention that, These space ships could be made a lot larger than anything we could make on Earth ,Like the size of a nuclear Submarine which is almost a spaceship in itself.

It's a shame that this hasn't happened sooner.

The concepts of reusable vehicles and a gateway were introduced to the cinematic audience by Stanley Kubrick in 2001 (released before we even set foot on the moon), and let's face it the level of technology theorized was at perhaps a 1980's level!

It's going to be interesting.  Since the military isn't allowed to set up shop on the Moon, I'm sure we will be accused of spying whether we will  or not.  But this is way over due.

TBH, I don't see this happening. The vast majority of the population wants the government and scientists/engineers to work on fixing all the problems here first. Climate change. Health care. Education. Crime. Homelessness. Living wages. Infrastructure repair and maintenance. Religious extremism. All these and more need to be addressed ASAP.
That said, I do love the idea of space exploration...I just think sending robots, not people, is the way to do it.

That is great news if its true and actually happens. It is long long overdue that we have a moon base. Personally I would love to see one that is underground and can be expanded to house and be self sufficient for at least a thousand people. Why build a space station when we have one orbiting us? Half the work is already done. And no orbit decay.

Yep, NASA and lying through its teeth go hand in hand, so if they say that Mars is a dead rock, with virtually no atmosphere, then more serious study is necesscary.

Yes because NASA could keep it a secret because no one else has ever sent a spacecraft there. Well no one except the  Russians... and the Europeans... oh, and India. But apart from that no one else would know... except the ground based astronomers and their ever more sophisticated instruments. Oh, and some of the many amateurs form around the world and THEIR, ever more sophisticated instruments

Other countries do give us valid information, that is very different to typical NASA data. And that is available if enough digging is done, and someone has an open mind.

l have only scoured through 1/4 of all Curiosity images to date, so......

And l agree a kid with a $100 telescope can point it at Mars, (at closest approach) and see what the real deal is, not the toned down, (for want of a better word) data NASA feeds to the masses.
