19th century book scared kids into behaving

Recommended Posts

Still Waters

In the 19th century, a German psychiatrist and writer wrote a children’s book which, if published today, would cause an outrageous scandal.

The year was 1845, the writer Heinrich Hoffmann, and the book was called Der Struwwelpeter, or Shaggy Peter. It is the most demented book ever published in Germany, where each morality tale is supposed to scare little children into behaving.

Hard to say, the kids might just really love Shaggy Peter today ... you never know with kids nowadays ...

Could be right about today's kids liking the book. My great aunts in Hot Springs had some german books, that their parents  must have brought over from Bavaria, like a prayer book and bible I definetly remember seeing. But didn't see any copies of this one in their collection. Funny thing is, great grandpa was born  1865, great grandma 1866, and both came from Bavaria. The book was certainly around when they were kids.
