Eerie black snow falls over Siberian region

Ghostly pictures of dark snowscapes - which should be pristine white - as blame pointed at failure to filter fumes at coal plant.

Prosecutors in Kemerovo region are reportedly checking the cause of black snow over three cities in the coalmining region - Prokopyevsk, Kiselyovsk and Leninsk-Kuznetsky. 

Local media have blamed the gloom on local plants processing coal.

Director general of Prokopyevskaya factory Anatoly Volkov explained to Vesti-KUzbass TV channel that a shield stopped working at his plant protecting the air from coal powder.

Poor people.  When we were in Beijing in 2000 for our adoption trip, it was early December and there was a perpetual smog that was so bad your eyes would burn and water as soon as you walked outdoors.  It's what London air must have been like during the late 1800s, I guess.  Black snow is just... depressing...

Looks like maybe they sand the roads out there in Siberia. Once the sand/snow slush melts, what's left is sand.

Britain was pitch black too in the industrial revolution. Some moth species just turned all black because of a phenotype advantage in a coal tainted environment.

Between increased smoking rates and such pollution, the Chinese have a burgeoning health crisis on the horizon.
