Even though some people are blind they can sometimes still see a bit of light. For example when you close your eyes you can somewhat still see a bit of light. I think that is why some wear them. Also I have known blind people who's blindness resulted in white cataracts around the eyes, so some wear them to hide it.

Back in the day I was told that the focusing, defocusing, and drifting that blind eyes undergo was disturbing to people who weren't used to it, so blind people wore dark glasses for cosmetic reasons.  We read a lot by the play of other people's eyes as part of their body language. If they are blind, how do they know that their eyes look weird?

I have to admit after watching the video that the idea of their eyes getting sunburned because they didn't know they were facing a bright light for an extended period of time or the idea that they could just get poked in the eye with a sharp stick from a tree they couldn't see didn't occur to me.

I have cataracts and was told to wear sunglasses to slow the progress until they get bad enough to operate on so I wear light sensitive lenses that auto darken rather than carry and extra pair of sunglasses as many times during work I am in and out many times during the day and it is too much bother to keep swapping them.

What if certain family members, friends of theirs or their doctors are themselves weird? Wouldn't it make sense, at that point, to remove their glasses? If not only for to make those weird persons feel more comfortable? Thus, doing them the courtesy? They wear sunglasses in order not to see the dog poop they are about to step onto.

I'm disabled and I have had a lot of blind friends. Outdoors blind people wear them to protect their eyes from sun and also injury, if you can't see things coming at you, things like insects, dust, etc covering your eyes is a good idea. Indoors it's also a comfort thing, as you can close your eyes and still engage with people, as a lot of people with eye issues, their eyes hurt, or dry out more. It's a way to keep engaged when if you're talking to a sighted person and closed your eyes for a long period they'd think you were ignoring them or asleep. Also on threads like this, it's great to be curious, it's not great to say abelist or insulting things about the disability you're curious about, blind people have adaptive equipment and can read online message boards just like you can.

My youngest might be blind by 40 due to an inherited eye disease (from my wifes side). From what I've come to learn the sunglasses are worn for eye protecting (as darkmoonlady mentioned) and the prevent further eye damage.
