Nnicolette Posted February 26, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 26, 2019 (edited) We really need to work on these names. Edited February 26, 2019 by Nnicolette 1 1
bison Posted February 26, 2019 #3 Share Posted February 26, 2019 (edited) The image at the top of the [Popular Mechanics] article is not the newly discovered Kuiper Belt Object 'Farfarout'. It is Ultima Thule, which is pretty far out itself, but not that far. Farfarout would appear as a barely discernible speck. It may eventually receive a more formal name, subject to the usual protocols for naming space objects. Given sufficient confirmation of its existence, the discoverer may propose a permanent name for it. Due to delays built into this process, Farfarout may be known by its present name for quite some time. Saru Posted February 26, 2019 #4 Share Posted February 26, 2019 If they find another one even more distant, will it be called FarFarFarOut ?
bison Posted February 26, 2019 #5 Share Posted February 26, 2019 Yes. I could see that happening. There are an immense number of objects in the Kuiper Belt. We'll probably run out of names before it runs out of objects!

It's only a nickname given to it by the astronomers until it is designated an official name by the International Astronomical Union. Most Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) are named after deities from minor religions. For example when TNO 136472 was discovered it was nicknamed Easter Bunny. It was given the official name Makemake after one of the deities that were worshipped on Easter Island.
