First you check the patent office. Then you hold a meeting. Then you have an election. Then you write applications. And finally you wait.

I hope none of the 2.118 people at the meeting do not take my original names to be patented before me.
bison Posted March 6, 2019 #9 Share Posted March 6, 2019 The rules say, among other things, that it must be a Greco-Roman name associated with Zeus/Jupiter, and that it not match or resemble the name of an asteroid. With thousands upon thousands of named asteroids, I think one might be hard put to come up with a name not already in use.
Orphalesion Posted March 6, 2019 #10 Share Posted March 6, 2019 I think it's a good idea to impose those restrictions, but yeah...by now they're gonna have to dig into the obscure aspects and epithets of Greek/Roman mythology.
bison Posted March 6, 2019 #11 Share Posted March 6, 2019 If anyone cares to suggest the name of a Greek or Roman mythological figure associated with Zeus or Jupiter in some way, which ends in either e or a (another of the requirements) I'll look it up in the list of already-named moons and asteroids to check for disqualifying matches, or near-matches. bison Posted March 7, 2019 #20 Share Posted March 7, 2019 I was surprised to find that there was at least one name from mythology, connected with Jupiter, that apparently hasn't already been attached to an asteroid, or moon of that giant planet. Juventia was the daughter of Jupiter and Juno. I considered Maia, too, one of Zeus' many paramours, but that name has been given to a star in the Pleiades star group.
