Farmer killed in Nebraska flooding

Recommended Posts

Eldorado

Parts of Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska are grappling with the aftermath of a powerful "bomb cyclone" that turned some areas into swamps as rivers spilled over highways and residential areas.

The "bomb cyclone" slammed the central US with hurricane-like winds and blizzard conditions this week, leaving in its tracks heavy rains and flooding.

In a news conference Friday, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts said the state has experienced historic flooding in nearly every region.

"James Wilke, a Columbus farmer, got a call to assist a stranger, and never came home."

The bomb cyclone didn't so much cause the floods as the two-three feet of snow pack that it melted all at once with it's rains.  At least here in Iowa.  The city was hauling away dump trucks of snow from the sides of the road in an attempt to reduce the flooding.  It seems to have worked.  The only things that got swamped were some parks and farmer's fields (In town).

What year were you in Offutt?  Think I was there from '92-'94.  It's flooding a bit now though: https://fox42kptm.com/news/local/offutt-air-force-base-issues-a-mandatory

I was there for the NATO 50th celebrations on Jaguars, 1999. I invaded Airforce 1's hanger looking for some Nitrogen.

Ah, that wasn't Airforce One,  that was the E-4.  It's the command plane for all the military big wigs to fly around in separate of the president during a nuclear war.  Bit surprised you got in, though.  Even the ground equipment mechanics needed a top secret clearance and regular finance/background checks to get in back in my day.

We got heavy HEAVY rain here, but nothing like the US.

Stay safe as you can.

A few yoghut pot canopies have blown off and a birch has come down near the field, as far as i know no casualties.

I just wandered up to the hanger and stepped in, a tradesman helped me out with some Nitrogen bottles, nice fella.

My daughter has to get to the Omaha Airport tomorrow to catch a flight to San Diego. Holy moly!

Check out the pictures. There are hardly any routes open, including I-29,  and the big bridge into Ohama washed away. Even in 2011 we could get through for my sister's wedding but this is crazy.

Something related but not widely publicized-  Iowa coal plants are running out of coal because the train tracks bringing it in got washed away during the floods.  They have been rotating the various plants to conserve coal but it's pretty much out.  Good news for me because they are using this down time for maintenance.
