Devastating tornado leaves house untouched

This really is bizzarre. What are the physics behind this ? 

How can trees near to the house be flattened - all around it - but the house not be touched ?

In September of 1979, I lived through a direct strike from a Category 3 hurricane in Mobile, Alabama. It trashed the city but we only had a single storm death DURING the storm. Down the street from the house I was sheltered in, a guy owned a '78 Corvette. Beautiful, new car. He had it under an open cover, just 4 posts and a roof. The next morning, that roof was laying flat on the ground and we assumed his beautiful car was crushed. Turned out that the roof lifted straight up and fell back down atop the car like a snug-fitting cover that kept it from getting as much as a scratch!
